Alabama earned its second shutout of the Tuscaloosa Regional Saturday in the form of a one-hit 3-0 shutout against Belmont. This marks Alabama’s 24th shutout of the season, tying it for fourth with the 2006 team.
The Crimson Tide established itself early on in the first inning. Infielder Jena Young was up to bat first and advanced to first base after being hit by a pitch.
This was an error that proved fatal for Belmont as Young was brought home alongside utility player Alexis Pupillo two hitters later by a single from catcher Marlie Giles.
With right fielder Ana Roman and Giles on base, outfielder Audrey Vandagriff grounded out to 1st base but brought home Roman to bring Alabama’s run tally to three to end the first.
Jocelyn Briski opened up for Alabama in the circle, allowing just one hit across all seven innings. Briski had a perfect game in the bag until a single from Belmont in the sixth accounted for the Bruins’ one hit.
“It’s awesome when your team puts up three runs in the first inning. It takes off a lot of pressure when you’re on the mound,” Briski said.
For Belmont, the three earned runs are tied for the most pitcher Maya Johnson has given up all season. Johnson currently holds the lowest ERA in Division 1.
“I think our coaches did a really good job of having a plan for us and way to approach her [Johnson,]” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “She’s an amazing pitcher in her own so all credit to her.”
Alabama will play again on Sunday in the regional championship against USC Upstate, which defeated Belmont 10-1 in the second elimination game on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon CT, with a second game at 2:30 p.m. if necessary.
