Junior Nationals qualifier Julian Rusk has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Florida State University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on Instagram, writing:
I’m extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Florida State University. I’d like to thank all my friends, family and coaches for helping me get here! Big thanks to Coach Will and Coach Brooke for making me the swimmer I am today. Thank you to Coach Studd and Coach Ben for giving me this opportunity!! GO NOLES!!
A junior at Westwood High School in Texas, Rusk currently trains year-round with Waterloo Swimming, where he primarily specializes in sprint freestyle and backstroke.
Rusk is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw him drop over two seconds in the 100 free, nearly two seconds in the 100 back, and half a second in the 50 free. He clocked all of his current lifetime bests at Winter Juniors – West in December, his second time qualifying for the meet. Individually, he finished 22nd in the 100 free (44.43), 34th in the 50 free (20.41), and 41st in the 100 back (49.43). He also helped Waterloo sweep the medley relays (19.79/43.98 anchor splits), finish second in the 200 free relay (20.26 leadoff), third in the 400 free relay (44.31 anchor), and 16th in the 800 free relay (1:41.31 anchor)
Beyond the short course pool, Rusk qualified to compete at Junior Nationals (LCM) last summer. He clocked personal bests in both his individual events, the 50 free (23.62) and 50 back (27.14), placing 32nd in the former and 41st in the latter. He also swam on Waterloo’s fourth-place 200 medley relay (23.30 anchor), 15th-place 200 free relay (23.81 anchor), and 20th-place 400 free relay (53.10 leadoff).

50 Freestyle: 20.26 100 Freestyle: 44.43 100 Backstroke: 49.43A Division I program, Florida State competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with the men’s team placing sixth out of 15 teams at this season’s conference championships. To earn a second swim at the meet, it took times of 19.46/42.67 in the 50/100 free and 46.71 in the 100 back, putting Rusk’s current best times outside the cutoffs, though he has two full seasons of swimming to go before his first conference meet.
Rusk joins Grady Bell, Joey Curcio, and Nicolas Kokidko in committing to the Seminoles’ class of 2031 so far.
