Celtic beat Hearts 3-1 at Celtic Park on Saturday to win the 2025-26 Scottish Premiership, sealing a record 56th top-flight crown.
Celtic pipped Hearts to the Scottish Premiership title on a dramatic final day of the season at Celtic Park.
Hearts had been top of the table for 250 days this season heading into the last matchday, while Celtic had not been in first place since 26 September, but at the very last, they crept above Derek McInnes’ heartbroken side.
Martin O’Neill’s men had to come from behind on Saturday, as they did so dramatically at Motherwell in midweek. Lawrence Shankland headed Hearts in front in the 43rd minute, only for Arne Engels’ penalty to level things just before the break.
Celtic dominated the second half, with Hearts knowing a draw would be enough, but late goals from Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand earned a 3-1 win for the hosts, and a record 56th Scottish top-flight title.
Osmand’s goal deep in stoppage time led to a pitch invasion that ultimately called an end to the game and the season as Celtic celebrated another title. The wait for a first non-Old Firm side to win the Scottish top-flight since 1985 goes on.
It was a nervy start from both, understandably, and it took until the 43rd minute for the deadlock to be broken.
An inswinging corner by Stephen Kingsley from the right to the far post was headed in by the inexplicably unmarked Shankland. That made it eight games in a row in which McInnes’ men had scored the first goal.
That lead didn’t last long, though, and somewhat appropriately given the midweek controversy at Motherwell, it involved a penalty given for handball. There was less debate about this one as a cross from the left struck Alexandros Kyziridis on the arm as he slid to block it.
Celtic have won five penalties via handballs in the Scottish Premiership this season, two more than any other side.
Engels stepped up to slot his penalty low to Alexander Schwolow’s left. It was the 10th penalty taken by the Belgian in the Scottish Premiership since he arrived in 2024, with all 10 successfully converted.
Celtic pushed and pushed in the second half, with substitute Kelechi Iheanacho hitting the post, but in the 87th minute, it happened.
Osmand was played in down the left, and he pulled it back to Maeda to prod the ball past Schwolow. The celebrations were delayed after the goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a VAR check showed otherwise and a loud roar filled Celtic Park.
Hearts pushed for an equaliser that would have won them the title, but it was ultimately their undoing, as Celtic broke away after Schwolow had come up for a free-kick, with Osman tapping into an empty net.
There were unsavoury scenes as Celtic fans ran onto the pitch, and referee Don Robertson eventually decided to blow up early given the two-goal gap, confirming Celtic’s 56th title, and fifth in a row.
