Pakistan cricket is in dire straits right now. After suffering a historic loss to Bangladesh in the first Test, they have lost eight World Test Championship (WTC) points due to a slow over-rate. Now, just before the must-win second Test in Sylhet, an ugly news has been making rounds involving premier pacer Shaheen Afridi and Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood.
As per Telecom Asia Sport, the Pakistan dressing room saw a tense verbal exchange after the defeat in Mirpur. Pakistan had collapsed badly in the fourth innings, getting bowled out for just 163 while chasing 268. This was after they were 119/3 at one stage. It was their third straight Test defeat to Bangladesh and another embarrassing chapter in what has become a nightmare WTC cycle for them.
Shan Masood questioned Shaheen Afridi’s pace
The report states that Shan Masood openly questioned the performance of Pakistan’s fast bowlers after the defeat, especially Shaheen Afridi. The left-arm pacer reportedly averaged just around 132 kph during the Test, far lower than Bangladesh quick Nahid Rana, who consistently touched 145 kph. On the Dhaka pitch, Rana extracted something that the Pakistani pacer couldn’t.
According to the report, Shan was unhappy with the lack of intensity from his pace attack and reportedly told the bowlers, “We failed to create pressure because of lack of speed and that is alarming.“
Pakistan’s bowling looked flat throughout the game despite conditions offering some help. Bangladesh batters absorbed pressure comfortably and Pakistan never really managed to dominate sessions consistently. Shaheen, usually the leader of the attack, finished without the impact Pakistan expected from him. In fact, his bowling average of 33.4 in the match was the worst by any pacer in the first Test.
But, unsurprisingly, the criticism from the captain did not sit well with the pacer, who is considered as the most premier fast bowler of Pakistan.
Shaheen hits back, Rizwan also criticised
As per the report, Shaheen responded angrily to Shan Masood’s comments and shifted the blame towards Pakistan’s batting unit, which once again failed under pressure.
Sources claimed Shaheen told the captain to focus on his own performances with the bat first. “To this Shaheen hit back by blaming the poor batting that failed to get a first innings lead and told the skipper to mind his own performance with the bat,” report stated. Shan had a miserable Test personally, scoring just 9 and 2 across the two innings.
Pakistan’s biggest collapse came in the first innings. They were cruising at 349/5 and looked set for a huge lead before losing their final five wickets for just 19 runs. Mohammad Rizwan’s dismissal became a major talking point inside the dressing room. The wicketkeeper-batter was batting on 59 when he played an unnecessary attacking shot and got out at a crucial moment. The coaching staff reportedly had serious discussions with him afterwards. Unluckily for Rizwan, his leave (in the second innings) is making all the rounds on the internet as well.

There were even talks about dropping Rizwan for the second Test and giving newcomer Ghazi Ghori a chance, although the management has reportedly decided against making that move. Pakistan are now sitting eighth in the WTC table with only 11.11 PCT.
Major changes are expected for the Sylhet Test starting Saturday. Shaheen Afridi and Imam-ul-Haq are reportedly under serious threat of being dropped, while Babar Azam is expected to return after recovering from injury. Red-ball specialist Khurram Shahzad is also likely to come back into the XI.
