ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Regional Health graduated 18 peace officers Friday who will begin providing security at Rochester General Hospital on June 1.
The peace officers will have powers similar to police officers, including the ability to detain and arrest people, issue appearance tickets, conduct searches and confiscate illegal guns. RRH officials say there will be no increase in police presence, and this program enhances existing safety approaches.
This comes a month after police say Gregory Strickland threatened a nurse and security officers at Rochester General Hospital.

“With the event that happened previously in April, we had to wait for RPD to come and arrest the individual,” said Tammy Snyder, senior vice president of system operations at Rochester Regional Health. “Now we’ll able to do that in live time and transport that individual to the county jail.”
Officials from RRH say this program and legislation has been in development and was signed in November 2024. They say the incident with Strickland “reinforced the need for continued investment already underway.”
Starting next year, Rochester Regional Health expects to roll out the peace officer program to Unity Hospital and elsewhere within the Rochester Regional Health system.
