ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Plans to install ICE detention holding cells in the Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building in downtown Rochester will move forward, according to Congressman Joe Morelle.
Construction is expected to begin Saturday, May 23, and continue for more than a year, Morelle said.
News10NBC has been investigating this story since February, when the U.S. General Services Administration told the station the federal building was approved for this purpose five years ago.
The GSA calls the plan a cost-saving measure, saying it will let Border Patrol end the lease for its current location on Pattonwood Drive in Irondequoit.
Democrats are slamming the decision.
“The federal government ignored our community, dodged basic questions and decided to move forward with this project anyway,” Morelle said. “The Trump administration has made clear they don’t believe this community deserves a voice in the process.”
When the announcement was first made back in February, the Monroe County Republican Committee said this decision “should not be treated as controversial,” and that “a federal building is a reasonable and appropriate place for federal processing.”
According to Morelle, the Department of Homeland Security says the project will include multiple detention holding areas, secure detainee transfer zones, expanded perimeter fencing, anti-scale security infrastructure, and restricted-access parking areas inside and around the federal building.
