ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Here’s your guide to events happening on Friday and this weekend in the Rochester area. You can learn more about what’s happening around town on our Community Calendar.
Lilac Festival (through Sunday)
There are only a few more days left in the 128th annual Lilac Festival, with live music, food, and games at Highland Park. The free festival closes out on Sunday.
Anees, an acclaimed R&B and pop singer from Virginia known for his viral single “Slip”, will be Friday’s music headliner at the KeyBank Center Stage. In addition, there will be free guided tours of the park’s collection of over 1,800 lilac bushes and other flowers. You can sign up here.
Closing weekend will feature the first-ever Lilac Table tasting event. It will also feature the annual Lilac 5K and 10K and the return of Art in the Park and Small Business Circle. The daily walking tours of the lilacs also continue. You can learn more about the schedule here. Here’s your guide:
Saturday, May 16: The first-ever Lilac Table, a tasting event featuring local restaurants and craft beverage producers, kicks off. The ticketed event is happening from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. behind the Lilac Adventure Zone. In addition, Art in the Park & Small Business Circle returns from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Artists from across the region will sell their work on Reservoir Avenue, up the hill from the main festival grounds. Sunday, May 17: The 47th annual Lilac 5K and 10K is taking place on the final morning of the festival. Both races start and finish on Highland Avenue near the purple crosswalk. The 5K begins at 8 a.m., and the 10K begins at 9:30 a.m. The course has changed slightly compared to previous years. You can register and see a course map here. In addition, there will be a one-mile fun run down Highland Avenue. The Tim Hortons Timbits Trot begins at 11:30 a.m. Also on Sunday, Art in the Park & Small Business Circle continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.QuiltFest at RIT field house (through Sunday)
The Genesee Valley QuiltFest kicked off on Friday at the RIT Gordon Field House, celebrating the artistry of quilting. It features more than 700 quilts from artists across the region and the country.
Organizers say there will be 56 quilting and arts vendors at the event, selling fabrics, tools, supplies, handcrafted items, and more. There will also be quilting classes lectures and exhibits. You can see the full schedule here.
Admission is $15 per day for adults and children over 13. It runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Half-price admission at the Strong Museum (Saturday)
Looking to go to the Strong Museum for half the price? This weekend is your chance. The museum says in recognition of the importance of play, it will be hosting a half-price general admission day on Saturday.
Tickets will be $12.50 for both adults 16 and up and kids ages 2-15. Full price tickets are normally $25, the museum’s website shows.
Not able to make it? The museum also offers half-priced admission Monday through Thursday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. To get tickets and learn more, click here.
East High School youth job fair (Saturday)
Over 20 local employers will be at East High School on Saturday for a youth job and resource fair. It aims to connect youth ages 15 to 24 with work opportunities and to help them explore career paths.
The fifth annual fair runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Family members are welcome to attend. The employment and training nonprofit RochesterWorks, along with multiple county and state-level lawmakers, will host the fair.
Here are some of the employers expected to attend: Burlington Stores, Chick-Fil-A in Henrietta, DreamLink NY, EnCompass, Home Depot, Judicial Process Commission, McDonald’s, Monroe 2 – Orleans BOCES, Monroe Community College Optics program, Monroe County Board of Elections, Monroe County Civil Service, Monroe County Emergency Communications Department 911 Center, New York State Department of Civil Service, New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, New York State Police, NY Army National Guard, Pathways Inc., Rochester Education Foundation, U.S. Army, University of Rochester/University of Rochester Medical Center, YAMTEP and the YMCA of Greater Rochester.
Free dog adoption (Saturday)
Rochester Animal Services on Verona Street is holding another dog adoption event on Saturday, where approved adopters can bring home a dog for free.
It runs from noon to 4 p.m. Nearly 20 dogs are available for adoption. The shelter will spay or neuter, vaccinate, and microchip the dogs before adoption. Dogs that are already spayed or neutered can go home the same day.
This is a part of the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” program. It works with organizations from across the U.S. to reduce adoption fees and to make pet adoption more accessible. You can see a list of available dogs here.
Flower City Days (Sunday)
The Rochester Public Market will be full of all kinds of plants and gardening supplies on Sunday, for the second Flower City Days of the season.
It runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, succulents, and more kinds of plants at the market. Here’s the schedule for the rest of this season’s Flower City Days:
