Davis recently revealed on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that Clooney was one of the actors who auditioned for the charming yet thieving hitchhiker J.D. in Thelma & Louise — and that she even read opposite him during the audition process.
Davis said she read with “four finalists” for the part and recalled being on a flight with Clooney. “At one point we’re talking about Brad Pitt, and he says, ‘You know, I hate that Brad Pitt.’ I said, ‘No, you don’t. Isn’t he like your best friend or something?’” Davis recalled the lively conversation with Clooney.
She continued, “‘No, I hate him because he got the part in Thelma & Louise!’” Davis recalled Clooney saying. “And I said, ‘Oh, did you want to get that part?’ And he said, ‘Couldn’t you tell when I read with you?’”
Davis famously went to bat for an unknown Pitt, who was 26 at the time, but seemed somewhat uncomfortable when asked about him. Host Andy Cohen asked her to describe what it was like to kiss Pitt in a single word, and she said, "Wait, really? I don't know if I want to answer this question." Co-guest actor Nathan Fillion tried to help by offering words like “Memorable” and “Sublime,” to which Davis simply replied, “Yes, both of those.”
When Cohen asked why she wanted Pitt for the role, she replied, "He got the part on his own merit, but I thought he read the best."
During a 2022 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Davis recalled the audition for J.D., and how each of the actors auditioning was “very handsome. They all had brown hair and were very talented. I didn’t care who it was going to be. Then the fourth one comes in, and it’s Brad Pitt. He’s so charismatic and so incredibly talented that I was screwing up his audition" because she'd forgotten "to say my line."
She named Clooney among those who auditioned, plus actors Grant Show and Mark Ruffalo also tried for the role.
