ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police say a car caused a chain reaction crash on the city’s northwest side, hitting a parked police cruiser, which then hit an officer standing outside.
It happened just after 12:30 a.m. on Friday near the corner of Dewey and Glenwood avenues. RPD says the police cruiser was parked there because it broke down and needed to be towed.
According to police, a red car heading south on Dewey Avenue crashed into the cruiser and two other parked cars. That forced the cruiser into the officer. News10NBC’s photojournalist saw heavy damage to the front of the red car.
An ambulance took the officer to the hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and has since been released. The car’s driver was not injured. Police say they charged the 36-year-old driver with criminal possession of a firearm after finding a gun inside his car.
Police are still investigating what caused the driver to crash. Check back for updates.
