Former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid has opined that individual success is not always leading to a player's success, but it can be the building block for a team's tremendous success.
Gautam Gambhir has led to several failures in the longest format of the game. In the past two years under Gambhir's coaching, India has faced whitewashes at home against New Zealand in 2024 and against South Africa in 2025. The only ray of hope is the tied series between India and England in 2025.
India, which at one stage made it to the WTC finals twice in the past three seasons, has failed to make it to the finals in 2025, and the same is likely to happen in 2027 as well, since India is far behind in the points table and does not have many chances to make it to their third WTC final.
Former Indian coach Rahul Dravid believes that the no-superstar policy of current coach Gautam Gambhir does not hold any importance for him, as he believes that every team and every sport needs its heroes. He said that individual success can lead to their team's glory.
“Any sport needs its heroes, and I don’t think people become heroes without performances. You can’t capture the imagination of a nation if you don’t deliver on the field, especially in India, where you get a lot of praise for what you do, but also a lot of brickbats.
"There’s a lot of scrutiny and constant focus on you. So to become a legend or a superstar in India means you’ve done a lot of things right, and in the process, you’ve also helped your team win,” Dravid told Wisden on the Scoop podcast.
"It is not easy to replace players like that" : Rahul Dravid opines on retiring Indian legends
Dravid led India to the 2023 WTC Final, where India lost the match. However, under Gambhir's coaching, India has not had the best of runs in red-ball cricket. With tremendous white-ball success, having won the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, he has failed completely in Test cricket, losing several home matches for India.
“The passion to do well in red-ball cricket is definitely there. We’ve had a couple of series where we haven’t performed as well as an Indian team, and that can happen. We are also missing a few key players, with some of the big names having recently retired—Rohit, Virat, and Ashwin—and it is not easy to replace players like that," said Dravid.
He then went on to add that despite the retirement of these senior cricketers, Indian cricket is still very strong, and he believes that the team will be competitive in every format it plays. Dravid added that maybe this evolution of the team would take some time, but things would surely turn around.
Rahul Dravid reasons why modern-day Indian stars are 'unable to find the same balance.'
The Indian great also claimed that situations have changed from his time to modern times. He claimed that though this current generation also gives equal significance to Test cricket, they have struggled to maintain their form due to the increasing volume of cricket.
“Red-ball cricket is still very important. There are still players who want to play red-ball cricket. Among players, there is a strong sense that it is probably the toughest format of the game and something that brings a lot of personal satisfaction when you succeed in it. But there is also a lot of white-ball cricket being played, and we have to be realistic about that.
"Many of these players today are having to juggle multiple formats, and it is not always easy because they may not get as much time to prepare for red-ball cricket as my generation did," he said on Indian cricketers struggling to maintain form across the formats.
"We effectively had fewer formats, and when I think about the preparation that went into some of the Test series I played, I feel the current players, not because they don’t want to, but because of the volume of cricket, are sometimes unable to find that same balance,” he added.
