While Auburn fans may be worried about new quarterback Byrum Brown after a rough showing in the spring game, Alex Golesh doesn’t share those concerns.
Brown’s throwing mechanics have always been non-traditional, but he had no problem being an efficient passer at South Florida in 2025. He averaged over 9 yards per attempt while completing over 66% of his passes last fall with the Bulls.
Brown has been USF’s primary quarterback since 2023 and is closing in on 1,000 career pass attempts at the collegiate level. Perhaps his long track record of success is why Golesh remain confident in his longtime QB.
The new Auburn coach admitted to seeing commentary from fans and media this spring, but dismissed any reason for worry.
“It was hard not to see it, my algorithms are jacked up,” Golesh told AL.com. “I thought it was funny.”

Quarterback play has been an issue for Auburn for years and last season was one of the ugliest yet for a passing attack on the Plains. As a team, Auburn finished 98th nationally in passer efficiency rating. The Tigers combined for 11 passing touchdowns all season, tied for 123rd nationally.
Brown and Golesh are hoping to bring improved passing metrics to Auburn in 2026.
