It worked for Willie Simms in 1898 and Calvin Borel in 2009, and now jockey Jose Ortiz has a chance at making it work, too – win the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) on different horses.
Ortiz, who guided Golden Tempo from last-to-first in winning the Derby at Churchill Downs on May 2, will be aboard Chip Honcho in Saturday’s $2 million Preakness at Laurel Park.
Simms won the Derby with Plaudit and the Preakness aboard Sly Fox; Borel won the Derby on 50-1 longshot Mine That Bird and the Preakness with the filly Rachel Alexandra.
Circumstances are a bit different for Ortiz. While Borel chose to ride Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness (he also rode her to a 20-length win in the Kentucky Oaks the day before the Derby), Ortiz picked up the mount on Chip Honcho after Golden Tempo was declared out of the race to prepare for the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 6. Mine That Bird finished second in the Preakness with Mike Smith aboard.
Ortiz, who won his first Derby with Golden Tempo, will again be aboard the Cherie DeVaux-trainee for the Belmont at Saratoga Race Course.
“Trying to win the Triple Crown on different horses – why not?” Ortiz said recently. “I’m going for it. Hopefully, I can win it.”
Chip Honcho gives Ortiz a strong chance in the Preakness
Chip Honcho, trained by two-time Preakness winner Steve Asmussen, bypassed the Derby to train up to the second leg of the Triple Crown.
“I think Chip Honcho has a very good chance to win the Preakness,” Ortiz said of the 5-1 co-third betting choice. “He’s a nice horse. I broke his maiden. He had a very good winter at the Fair Grounds, other than the last race. But he’s a really nice horse and has a really good shot in the Preakness.”
Back in 2009, Borel was back on Mine That Bird for the Belmont and finished third behind Summer Bird and Dunkirk. In 1898, the Belmont was run prior to the Preakness, and Bowling Brook won under jockey Fred Littlefield.
Ortiz rode Chip Honcho to a maiden win last fall at Churchill Downs. The colt went on to win the Gun Runner Stakes at the Fair Grounds with Paco Lopez aboard (Ortiz was already committed to Golden Tempo), then ran fourth in the Lecomte Stakes (G3) with Lopez aboard, second in the Risen Star Stakes (G2), and fifth in the Louisiana Derby (G2), both under Luis Saez.
Ortiz has a Career Triple Crown
With his Derby win, Ortiz now has a career Triple Crown – he won the 2017 Belmont with Tapwrit and the 2022 Preakness with Early Voting.
“It’s a great opportunity to be in the race, to be on a live horse like Chip Honcho,” Ortiz said. “Obviously, you take Pimlico out of the equation. It used to be a very speedy track. I think Laurel is probably going to be on a more level playing field.
“The Preakness is an amazing race to win. When I won it, it was unreal. I was very happy I could do it. And I’m very happy I could get my own Triple Crown, you know, in different years. But it still feels good.”
Asmussen, of course, is happy to have the jockey Jose Ortiz back. The jockey has teamed with the Hall of Famer the past few years at the Fair Grounds and rode Magnitude to three straight wins, including over Forever Young in the $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1) on March 28.
“He’s familiar with the horse (Chip Honcho). Just through consistently working with Jose over the winter and stuff, you’re always discussing races and racehorses,’’ Asmussen said. “It was his belief in Golden Tempo that proved true.”
