Caleb Williams has a lot going for him as he enters Year 3 as the Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback.
But is he the NFC North’s best quarterback?
Well, one pundit seems to believe so.
FOX Sports talking head Colin Cowherd dropped his list of top quarterbacks. Williams ranks third. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Bears quarterback rank that highly on a top-10 list of NFL signal callers. Heck, there have been years where a Bears QB would not have ranked in the top-3 of NFC North quarterbacks. And yet, here we are in the big and beautiful 2026 with Cowherd making an argument for Chicago’s QB1 to be the NFL’s No. 1 QB in 2026. That isn’t a statement I am going to just gloss over, especially since he builds an interesting case.
Here are some notable Cowherd quotes:
“Only one quarterback had more big-time throws (20-plus yard throws) than Caleb Williams. It wasn’t Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson. Caleb Williams has the lowest interception rate since he entered the league, lower than Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and Josh Allen. He’s now officially the fastest quarterback on clock, better than Lamar, faster than Josh Allen. He also had the longest completion in the league last year.” “He never gets hurt and doesn’t throw interceptions. That’s just the stuff on the edges. Now, he throws the longest ball, is the fastest quarterback and has the lowest interception rate. He also counts for just 3.5% against the cap. “Now, if he gets rid of the negative plays, like he did last year, is he next year, all things considered, the best quarterback in the league?” Sergio Estrada-Imagn ImagesTo be clear, Caleb Williams still has work to do before anyone crowns him as the league’s top quarterback.
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson has made it clear that he wants to see Williams improve his completion percentage in a big way. And while his 90.1 passer rating in 2025 is among the best we’ve ever seen from a quarterback in Chicago, it still ranked 22nd among quarterbacks who played enough snaps to qualify for the leaderboard. Plus, it would be nice to see him become the franchise’s first quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards and reach the 30-touchdown milestone. Again, Williams has work to do — but we know he is putting in the effort and he isn’t shying away from his coach’s challenge.
Now, if Williams checks all of those boxes, then I think it wouldn’t be too wild to at least start having that conversation about where he ranks among the league’s best. But for now, Caleb Williams is a darn good quarterback on a team-friendly contract who is performing at a high level while living upt to the expectations that come with being the top quarterback picked in his draft class.
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE 2026 CHICAGO BEARS SCHEDULE
Is Caleb Williams the NFC North’s best quarterback?
I fully expect Chicago Bears fans to co-sign Colin Cowherd, who says that Caleb Williams is a top-10 quarterback and the best of the bunch among those who reside in the NFC North. However, that isn’t a consensus belief.
ESPN analysts Dan Orlovsky and Bart Scott have dissenting opinions on who the NFC’s top QB is right now:
"At the end of this season, I think we may say that Kyler Murray is the best quarterback [in the NFC North.]" @BartScott57 has high expectations for Kyler Murray as the Minnesota Vikings' QB ? pic.twitter.com/bYOO9NveuV
— Get Up (@GetUpESPN) May 13, 2026"If I'm ranking the NFC North quarterbacks Jared Goff is at one and Jordan Love is at two..That would be a clear one and two for me"@danorlovsky7 #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/VCS9btiWJj
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) May 13, 2026I don’t want to do a tit-for-tat on which team has the best quarterback in the division. It’s the Bears, and Caleb Williams, because duh. But also, the reality is that the players will ultimately decide it on the field when the season kicks off in September.
The way I see it, there will be no excuses for why someone falls short of the lofty expectations that are being put on them in 2026. Jared Goff and Jordan Love are seasoned vets. Kyler Murray has the best supporting cast he has ever had as a pro. Caleb Williams has the division’s best coach and offensive play-caller to go along with a collection of pass-catching weapons.
I hope that we will have a decisive answer to the question posed in the subhead at the top of this section by year’s end. Because if Caleb Williams is decisively the best quarterback in the division, then it will make it ridiculously easy for the Chicago Bears front office to draw up a contract extension that keeps him around for a long time. And because Bears General Manager Ryan Poles is already on the record saying that he has been thinking about it, Williams checking whatever boxes he needs to in 2026 will make it that much easier.
