And So It Goes was considered a moderate success after its release, having only made $25.3 million at the box office compared to its $18 milliom budget.

Fans called the film a "heartfelt and surprisingly engaging drama" carried by its leading stars, while others called it a feel-good movie. While some critics praised Keaton and Douglas as powerful actors, the film didn't do well amid reviews. The film has a 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.9 on IMDb.
