City announces details of settlement with Denny Wright, RPD officer blinded in stabbing

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The City of Rochester has agreed to a lump sum payment of $1.25 million to Denny Wright, the Rochester Police officer who was blinded in a stabbing while responding to a call.

The city’s announcement comes after the Monroe County Legislature voted on Tuesday to approve a $500,000 payment for Wright. A lawsuit that Wright brought against multiple city and county agencies says he wasn’t sufficiently warned of the danger he faced, nor given backup, while responding to the mental health call in October of 2019.

The city says that, after a series of court-facilitated settlement conferences, all parties have agreed to these terms:

The city will make a lump sum payment to Wright and his wife, Sonia Lagares-Wright, for $1.25 million. Monroe County will make a lump sum payment of $500,000. City of Rochester will continue to pay for medical care related to Wright’s line-of-duty injuries, and to continue to provide health insurance for Wright and his wife. Wright will retire from the city, but will continue to act as an ambassador for the Rochester Police Department. The city will pay Wright $65,000 annually for up to 10 years following his retirement as additional compensation for pain and suffering.

In a statement, the city called Wright “a hero to the Rochester community and the embodiment of the courage, the selflessness, and the humility to which all police officers aspire.”

    More about the lawsuit

The lawsuit claims city and county agencies failed to warn Wright about the danger he faced while responding to the house on Peck Street in 2019. Keith Williams, the man who attacked Wright, is now serving a 40-year prison sentence after being convicted of attempted aggravated murder and aggravated assault.

According to the suit, there were 54 calls about the home in the previous 18 months, including a call that resulted in a standoff between Williams and police. When Wright responded, he found Williams hiding and acting agitated. Wright called for backup, and bodycam footage shows Williams stabbing him multiple times in the head, face, eye, and body.

The suit claimed negligence on the county’s part, saying the county failed to maintain and distribute accurate records about the history of Williams, failed to properly monitor and supervise Williams, and failed to warn Wright of the potential danger he faced.

In 2023, Wright received the Medal of Valor and the 2019 Governor’s Police Officer of the Year award. He was the first RPD officer to receive the award.
