Former Team India captain Kris Srikkanth has made a bold prediction regarding Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya. Pandya has been under a lot of scrutiny for both his and his team's poor performance in IPL 2026. Over the last few days, there have been a lot of rumours floating around about whether or not Pandya will leave the Mumbai Indians at the end of this year.
Having missed MI's last two matches due to a back spasm, there have also been reports that he has been unofficially sacked as MI captain. Now, Srikkanth has put his thoughts forward about what Pandya's future at the Mumbai Indians might look like.
Hardik Pandya had played for the Mumbai Indians his entire IPL career between 2015 and 2021, winning three IPL titles in the process. In 2022, he left MI to captain the Gujarat Titans - one of the two new franchises introduced to the IPL that year.
In their first year as a franchise, Hardik led them to the IPL title. In their second, 2023, Pandya led them to the top of the points table and a runner-up finish in a very close final. Before the 2024 season, MI decided to trade him in.
Specifically, trade him in as captain. Hardik's re-entry to MI meant that Rohit Sharma, who had won five IPL titles as captain with the team, was sacked. The move did not go down well with fans. Pandya was booed across all stadiums in the country that year, and the Mumbai Indians finished tenth.
He was retained as captain for 2025, and after an initial stumble, led them through to a playoff finish. Last year, MI went from winning just 1 of their first 5 matches to winning 7 of their last 9, making it to the top four.
MI then proceeded to beat GT in the Eliminator, but lost Qualifier-2 to the Punjab Kings. In 2026, it has not been pretty. Hardik Pandya has had to sit through MI becoming among the first teams to be eliminated from playoff contention in IPL 2026.
Because of a combination of illness and injury, Hardik Pandya has led the Mumbai Indians in only 8 of their 11 matches so far. Under Pandya specifically, MI struggled and managed just 2 wins in these 8 matches.
Now, MI are placed ninth on the points table with just 3 wins in 11 matches, and can only play party-poopers for other teams in the remaining three matches.
"Where will Hardik Pandya go next year?" - Srikkanth
Kris Srikkanth took to his YouTube channel and spoke about the issue. He said that since there are no official announcements, all dealings have already been made, and that Hardik Pandya's time with the Mumbai Indians is coming to an end.
“Looks like there’s no news, no official update from anyone. It feels like they’ve basically said, ‘You’re not needed anymore, you can leave.’ In fact, you heard Hardik’s comments too. Either they will release him, or they’ll just say, ‘Thanks, bro, thanks for everything,’ and move on."
"Then the question becomes — where will he go next year? Will he be traded or go into the auction?" said Srikkanth.
Srikkanth went on to say that if Hardik parted ways with MI, it would be best for both parties. "The best thing for both parties is to say, 'Boss, you go your way, I will go my way. We will meet somewhere down the line," he added.
Hardik Pandya's form in IPL 2026
While his team's poor form has brought Hardik Pandya a lot of flak, it has mainly been amplified by his lack of form with both bat and ball. In his 8 matches, Hardik has made 146 runs at an average of just 20.85 and a strike rate of 136 - one that feels very un-Hardik.
With the ball in hand as well, he has struggled. He has taken just 4 wickets at an average of 61.50, and a bowling economy rate of nearly 12 runs an over. He took a five-wicket haul last year but only has 4 wickets in this entire season.
