The ever-evolving NFL schedule has added a new wrinkle with an island game being played on the day before Thanksgiving. And, as you would expect, Netflix — which has the exclusive rights to that game — was going to angle for that game to feature some heavy hitters. So perhaps it comes as no surprise that the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams will have the honors of playing in the inaugural Thanksgiving Eve showdown.

That sound you heard was me exhaling after learning that the Chicago Bears will not be playing in this one. Don’t get me wrong. I like holiday games. Or, at least, I like the idea of holiday games. What I don’t like is the idea of the NFL eating away at my holiday enjoyment by forcing the Bears into a game that throws their schedule for a loop. I’m all for the Packers being the guinea pigs, testing the waters of this game.

Heck, there is a real chance that the Bears could be thrust into the holiday spotlight on multiple occasions.
In addition to the Thanksgiving Eve game, the NFL has three games scheduled for Turkey Day, a game on Christmas Eve, and a triple-header on Christmas Day. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see a Bears-Lions showdown on the holiday in Detroit. And it certainly wouldn’t come as a shocker if the league gave the team the gift of playing in one of the Christmas games. I used to not be down with Christmas football. And while there is a part of me that would prefer to stick with my traditional holiday enjoyment of the NBA, I’m more open to the Bears playing on Christmas than I have been in the past. Keeping an open mind is cool.
With that being said, I’m still a bit surprised to see that there have been no Bears games announced to this point. Don’t get it twisted. I’m glad the Bears aren’t in this game. There is an expectation that the team will be featured prominently on the 2026 NFL calendar. And it still could be. But to not have anything out there yet isn’t something I saw coming. Perhaps mentioning it out loud will change things. We’ll see…
