Rochester’s gas prices still rising on Wednesday as negotiations stall in war with Iran

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester’s average gas price hit $4.58 per gallon on Wednesday, according to AAA’s latest report, as negotiations continue to stall in the war with Iran.

Rochester’s current average is a cent higher than yesterday and 9 cents higher than last Wednesday. Compared to a month ago, Rochester’s average is 40 cents higher. Gas prices have been rising locally and nationally since the war with Iran broke out because of the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.

Experts say the national average for gas could hit $5 per gallon by Memorial Day Weekend, a busy road travel time for millions of Americans. The national average, currently $4.51 per gallon, recently fell below Rochester’s average, but remains high. It dropped by two cents over the past week, but it has risen by 38 cents over the past month.

The New York State average is currently $4.59 per gallon. That’s four cents higher than a week ago and 46 cents higher than a month ago.

Overall, Rochester has seen the sharpest spike in gas prices since March of 2022, during the pandemic era. As prices continue to rise, News10NBC has spoken with people who are relying more on cycling to get around. We’ve also spoken with drivers who use their own cars for work and have struggled with the high prices.

The cheapest gas in the Rochester area on Wednesday is $4.15 per gallon at the SNK on North Clinton Avenue, according to GasBuddy. You can find the lowest price in your area through GasBuddy’s website.

Latest on the Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. is still maintaining its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump has threatened to resume bombing Iran if it doesn’t agree to reopen the strait and limit its nuclear program.

Iran’s military has taken control of the strait as leverage during the war. That’s sent oil prices soaring worldwide. You can see where the rest of the world’s oil supply travels in this story. In response, the U.S. Navy has blocked all ships traveling to or from Iranian ports from passing through the strait. President Trump ordered the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz so the U.S. could stop oil tankers from entering Iranian ports, cutting off a major source of revenue for the Iranian government.

Will the federal gas tax be suspended?

President Trump has said he wants to suspend the federal gas tax. However, suspending the tax would require an act of Congress. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have already been pushing for a gas tax suspension, with some legislation in Congress now proposing a halt through Oct. 1. You can read more here.

How to find the cheapest gas price

In addition to checking GasBuddy’s fuel finder, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry has some tips to improve fuel efficiency or find the lowest price:

Keep your gas tank at least half full. This way, you have time to choose the cheapest gas station instead of what’s closest. Drive smoothly, as hard braking and acceleration can reduce fuel economy. Buy top-tier gas for better engine performance and fuel efficiency. Regularly check tire pressure, as low pressure can affect fuel efficiency. Use gas apps to find the cheapest gas nearby.
