NEWARK, N.Y. — Newark-Wayne Community Hospital announced Wednesday it will be ending inpatient labor and delivery, newborn nursery, and post-partum services.
In a post on Facebook, the hospital said the decision was made due to “changing community needs, declining delivery rates across the region, and ongoing workforce challenges,” and was also made based on patient safety.
“Labor and delivery care requires a highly specialized team available around the clock, and ongoing staffing challenges combined with declining birth volumes make it increasingly difficult to safely sustain these services at Newark-Wayne,” the hospital said on its website.
The hospital said it has filed plans with the state Department of Health and is working closely with them throughout the process.
What happens now?
The hospital says services will continue during the transition period. After that, deliveries will move to Rochester General Hospital and other facilities.
The OB/GYN office in Newark will stay open for prenatal and outpatient OB/GYN care before and after deliveries have been transitioned out of the birthing center.
All other services at the hospital will remain fully open, the hospital says.
