Diamondbacks streak of dominant starts ends with Zac Gallen in loss to Rangers

Brandon Pfaadt, whose role has typically been to pitch in relief when things go wrong for the Arizona Diamondbacks, had to come in to pitch on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers.

It had been a while, May 3, as the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation has been so effective lately.

Tuesday’s game went awry for starter Zac Gallen and the Diamondbacks, however, who snapped a three-game winning streak with a 7-4 loss.

The D-backs scored three runs after three walks in the ninth inning to make the Rangers sweat, but they did not get the tying run to the plate.

More streaks ended, including Arizona’s seven straight starts of six-plus innings and four consecutive quality starts (six-plus innings, three or fewer earned runs).

Zac Gallen does not get through 5 IP vs. Rangers

Gallen’s final line was 4.2 innings and seven earned runs, which looks disastrous, although a missed play from shortstop Geraldo Perdomo with two outs in the fifth inning tacked on three runs to that total. Perdomo slipped while getting his feet underneath him, and the Rangers ended up scoring four runs in the inning to seemingly put the game out of reach.

It was not ruled an error, but even five innings and four earned runs would have been a poor result for Gallen.

Gallen has been the outlier in a dominant stretch for the starting rotation. He has accounted for the two non-quality starts out of the team’s last eight games.

His outing on Tuesday involved two solo home runs and a rough second inning with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but he generally did not allow much hard contact. He also did not miss bats (six whiffs), and the Rangers were able to find holes for seven hits.

With the seven earned runs, Gallen’s ERA increased to 5.65, the fourth highest in Major League Baseball among 81 qualified starters. At this point last year, Gallen owned a 4.59 ERA before a brutal end of May, June and July.

Joc Pederson and Ezequiel Duran hit the two home runs, with Pederson taking Gallen’s second pitch of the game yard. Duran’s home run was 92.4 mph off the bat, one of the four lowest exit velocities on a home run hit in the league this season, per Statcast.

Gallen’s fastball was down a tick, and he attempted to mix it up with more changeups and sinkers.

    Offense lined out

As for the Diamondbacks’ largely absent offense, Tuesday was a bit different.

While the game was competitive early, the D-backs hit the ball hard and saw very few results. Through five innings, the D-backs hit seven baseballs at least 97 mph off the bat against Rangers starter MacKenzie Gore. They went 1-for-7, an Ildemaro Vargas home run being the exception.

Regardless of how, the bottom line was that the D-backs went another game without generating many scoring opportunities.

Gore threw eight innings with one earned run, as the D-backs worked one walk against a pitcher averaging 4.7 per nine innings.

The Diamondbacks showed some life in the ninth inning when reliever Gavin Collyer (on his birthday), walked the first three batters and allowed an RBI single to Vargas. The Rangers had to get high-leverage left-hander Jacob Latz in the game, who earned the save.

Pfaadt ended up striking out five of the 11 batters he faced in three scoreless innings. He threw 39 pitches, as the D-backs continue trying to keep him stretched out. The D-backs are 0-5 in games he’s pitched out of the bullpen.

    Rubber match Wednesday

Ryne Nelson (1-3, 5.68) will pitch for Arizona on Wednesday with a series win on the line.

    The D-backs will face right-hander Kumar Rocker (1-4, 5.01).

The game starts at 5:05 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
