The University of Chicago’s men’s baseball team broke a staggering 113-year drought this year, but there’s still a lot left to play for.
That’s because the Maroons are getting set for the NCAA Division III baseball tournament, which kicks off this weekend at 16 regional sites across the United States.
For the University of Chicago, that journey will commence at Washington & Jefferson, located in Washington, Pennsylvania where they’ll play the host school at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
The Maroons, along with Washington & Jefferson, Scranton and Bridgewater, will tangle in a double-elimination regional tournament, with one of the teams advancing to the super sectional round, which will take place later this month.
Needless to say, the Maroons have already made some big-time history this season. According to the school, the university captured its first conference championship in 113 years when they claimed top honors in the University Athletic Association.
In fact, their last conference title had come all the way back in 1909, when they won what was then-known as the Big Nine. It was their fourth conference title according to Baseball Reference, and it was the last one they’d win until they finally captured the UAA crown this season.
Now, with a conference title in tow and a huge goal of competing for an NCAA championship, they’ll make their second-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament this weekend. If they win their game on Friday against Washington & Jefferson, they’ll play the winner of Friday’s Bridgewater-Scranton game for a berth in the regional final.
If they drop their Friday game, they’d play the loser of that tilt in an elimination game on Saturday.
The regional will be decided on Sunday.
