Willie Nelson and Leon Russell’s Daughters Are Carrying On Their Fathers’ Musical Legacy Together

Music history comes full circle with a new collaboration between Amy Lee Nelson and Tina Rose Bridges, daughters of Willie Nelson and Leon Russell, as the country/Americana duo ALeeN ROSE. Their debut single, "They're There," featuring Willie Nelson, is a touching tribute to Amy Lee's brother, Billy Nelson, who passed away in 1991, and Tina Rose's father, who died in 2016.

Nelson and Bridges explained to PEOPLE their decision to form the band. Amy shared, "Tina Rose called me one evening during lockdown, and we talked about the feelings of loss after her dad's death. I told her that I often find myself saying 'they're there' when speaking of loved ones who have passed. I shared with her a song I had started writing after having dream visions of my brother, Billy."

Tina added, "I was honored that she [Amy Lee] invited me to contribute to it. My verse is about a distinct memory I have — of the first time my dad visited me in a dream after he died. It was so comforting, and I genuinely felt as if I got to spend some time with him."

Amy and Tina received additional help on "They're There" from Amy's 93-year-old father, Willie. According to PEOPLE, he wrote the song's bridge, played guitar, and lent his unmistakable vocals. "Now it's a full-on family song, as it should be," Amy said.

Amy and Tina's country/Americana duo, ALeeN ROSE, is significant for several reasons—especially because of their fathers' history as colleagues and friends. In 1979, Willie Nelson and Leon Russell released their chart-topping double album, One for the Road, which features their hit cover of "Heartbreak Hotel." Although One for the Road is their only joint album, the two continued to perform together on stage over the years.

News of ALeeN ROSE's "They're There" release comes soon after Willie Nelson's son, Lukas Nelson, performed a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song for You" at Cain's Ballroom in Oklahoma. The track's release also coincides with what would have been Billy Nelson's 68th birthday.
