More NFL Schedule Leaks, Darth Luther’s Backstory, New Prime Viewing Windows Have Opened, and Other Bears Bullets

Day 113 of the Chicago Bears offseason. I wonder if I’m in the minority in enjoying that the NFL has turned its annual schedule release into a spectacle. Don’t get me wrong. I understand why people roll their eyes this time of year. But schedule-release shenanigans bring color into what is otherwise a monotone part of the offseason. Plus, it allows creatives working for teams to strut their stuff. If football is family, then the schedule-release portion of the schedule is the quirky cousin with unique music tastes and has pics from their solo trip that you actually want to see.

Another day, another NFL schedule leak that has Bears implications:

Chiefs and Broncos capping off Week 1 ?Monday Night Football is BACK ? pic.twitter.com/mIHVwKEBO7

    — ESPN (@espn) May 12, 2026 The Kansas City Chiefs are squaring off against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 1, which takes another possible Week 1 opponent for the Seattle Seahawks off the board. Am I supposed to take ESPN’s graphic usage as a sign that Patrick Mahomes will be back under center for the Chiefs in Week 1? Also, I’ve never seen a schedule release announcement list the teams, but have the location still TBD. Is this going to be an international game? If so, which AFC West rival is losing a home game? I have more questions than answers after this announcement.

So we’re down to the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, and Los Angeles Chargers as the most viable options to provide the competition for the Seahawks in Week 1. Even with my biases being what they are, how can you not put the Bears in this window? Especially with the MNF (Chiefs-Broncos) and SNF (Cowboys-Giants) windows spoken for with games? I’ve expressed my thoughts on the idea of the Bears and Seahawks squaring off in Week 1 here. But with that being said, here are five other things I’d like to see on Chicago’s 2026 schedule: Week 2 vs. Jaguars — An early-season matchup at Soldier Field between two of the most hyped QB prospects of a generation? Yes, please. Bears at Falcons — Now that the world knows about The Bears Tax, I can see the league sticking it to them by making them fly across the pond. Whether they play the game in Atlanta or Madrid, the NFL should make this a “Custody of Compensatory Draft Picks” on a ladder match to really spice it up. Bears at Bills in December in primetime — Give me a snowy upstate New York panoramic shot from NBC’s Sunday Night Football production team and a fade into DJ Moore preparing to face his former team. Messing with the weather — Make the Buccaneers play the Bears in December so it can be like the old NFC Central days. And let the Bears play in Miami when it’s cold in Chicago because (1) the last time the Bears played out there, it was ridiculously warm and (2) we deserve a trip to a warm-weather destination when it’s cold. A Week 7 or Week 8 bye week — Back in January, Cubs all-star center field Pete Crow-Armstrong attended a Bears playoff game. A well-timed bye week could allow Bears quarterback Caleb Williams to return the favor at a World Series game. Matt Marton-Imagn Images One thing I don’t want to see on the Bears’ schedule is a Thanksgiving Eve game. Not only do I have no interest in a wonky schedule, but I also don’t want to meal-plan around football during my favorite time of the year to cook. I will gladly accept the Bears being part of the Christmas Day triple-header if it means that Thanksgiving is kept clean for me. On the one hand, I was right about the Buffalo Bills opening their new stadium in a primetime game against an NFC North opponent. But what I didn’t peg was that the game would be on Amazon Prime and that the opponent would be the Detroit Lions. This made for quite the announcement:

    — Buffalo Bills (@BuffaloBills) May 11, 2026 I’m old enough to remember when the Thursday Night Football schedule was loaded with throwaway games featuring division rivals that folks would otherwise have no interest in watching. Now, I’m wondering if the uptick in quality games on the streaming platform is reflective of the price that Amazon pays the NFL for this package. One of the NFL’s three Thanksgiving Day games is already spoken for with FOX landing the NFC East grudge match between the Cowboys and Eagles. I know people are tired of seeing the Cowboys in prime viewing spots. And, for the record, I don’t blame them for feeling that way. However, the Cowboys on Thanksgiving is a tradition that shouldn’t end anytime soon. When I was growing up, there was nothing like the food coma nap in the middle of the Cowboys Thanksgiving game, followed by waking up and thumbing through the Black Friday sales ads with my mother. The folks at Awful Announcing are doing a stellar job of covering the NFL schedule release, particularly this stuff about how the league created new standalone prime-viewing windows for CBS, FOX, and NBC. That this is coming on the heels of a federal probe or the U.S. president’s recent meeting with FOX exec Rupert Murdoch is not lost on me — or anyone who follows this stuff. The Darth Luther backstory is everything I wanted and needed:

Let’s not forget that the Chicago Bulls also have the No. 15 pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft. Over at BN Bulls, Alex Kirschenbaum has a look at who will land in Chicago with their other first-round pick. It is mock draft madness for the United Center tenants. Our friends at BN Blackhawks are tracking mock drafts of expert picks. Michael shares the perspective of what it is like to bring a kid to Wrigley Field. Reading about it put me in a place where I was recalling my first trip to Wrigley. I don’t know if high-def TVs take away from the vibe, but the difference between the colors on TV and what I saw when I first laid eyes on the stadium in person was stark. The green of the ivy and the grass still pops in person. But seeing it as a child for the first time is unlike any other experience I’ve ever had.
