Pennsylvania 3A State Runner-Up Joey Curcio Heads South With Commitment to Florida State (2027)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Upper Dublin Aquatic Club’s Joey Curcio has committed to further his academic and athletic career at Florida State University beginning the 2027-2028 season.

I am absolutely stoked to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Florida State University! First, I want to thank all the people that have supported me throughout this journey. I would also like to give a special thanks to my mom, my dad, and my sister. Without them, none of this would be possible. Thank you to all my teammates and coaches at La Salle/UDAC for shaping me into the young man I am today. Lastly, a huge thanks to Coach Ben, Coach Barnes, Coach Wood, Coach Neal, and the rest of the FSU coaching staff for giving me this opportunity. #GoNoles #FearTheSpear #mitted

Curcio hails from Abler, Penn., and recently competed at the PIAA 3A State Championships, representing La Salle College High School. At that meet, he finished runner-up in the 100 backstroke, touching in a lifetime best effort of 47.53. He also swam a best time in the 100 fly in prelims, touching in 49.39. He would later finish 7th overall in the event in 49.46. Ten days later, at the Middle Atlantic Senior Championships, Curcio notched a new 200 back best time in 1:45.55.

He also competed at the Katie Ledecky Invitational back in December, where he swam a pair of solid freestyle bests, including a 20.60 in the 50 free and a 46.42 100 free lifetime best. He also swam his fastest-ever 200 free at the UDAC Rocktoberfest Meet in October of last year, in 1:48.98.

Curcio is joining a Florida State men’s program that finished 6th at the 2026 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships in February.

Based on Curcio’s best times, he would have finished 34th in the 100 back, 39th in the 200 back, and 54th in the 100 fly.

The backstroke events were not necessarily the high point of the ACC Championships, as they scored only 24 points in the 100 back and no points in the 200 back.

Curcio is still a ways out from his college debut, but he has plenty of time to make that jump up into scoring range.

He managed to drop more than two seconds off his best 100 back time in about 14 months. His 200 back has seen an even more dramatic progression curve, having sliced nearly nine seconds off of his best time from last March of 1:54.20. If he manages to keep that improvement up, he could be a consistent backstroke threat within the ACC.

Curcio also could be a future member of medley relays, as he holds a best 50 backstroke time of 21.83 from March’s Middle Atlantic Senior Championships. A time that would’ve been the 4th fastest on the Seminole men’s team.

Curcio joins Grady Bell and Nicolas Kodiko in the 2027 recruiting class for Florida State.
