LIMA, N.Y. — The historic American Hotel in Lima is now under new ownership.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke to the new owners about the work they’re doing to restore the century-old building. The hotel is closed right now for restoration, but the new owners Brendan Flansburg and his wife Beth McCabe say they want to preserve the building’s history — it’s stood for more than a hundred years.
Right now they’re going through dozens of artifacts inside. They say it’s like a time capsule.
“You can’t just skip over a drawer because you don’t know what you’re going to find in there. It could be anything I was saying the first day which is something we posted we found a newspaper from 1918 Kaiser fleas Germany,” Flansburg said.
One cash register is more than a hundred years old. Some of the newspaper clippings date back to the 1930s.
“It really is an honor because we’ve now been given all of these treasures to sort of carefully catalog we would love to display them for the Public,” McCabe said.
Carl Anderson says he’s lived in Lima for decades. He’s glad Brendan and Beth are honoring the hotel’s past.
“There’s a lot of elderly people this and that and they go in there all the time. So you probably want to stick to the same, same thing,” Anderson said. Anderson wished Brendan and Beth good luck.
While they’re committed to preserving the hotel’s history, Brendan and Beth aren’t shying away from new ideas.
“We’re thinking maybe some apartments, maybe some short-term rentals. Certainly the restaurant and bar will be back maybe some outdoor spaces you know so just like he said we have a lot of ideas,” McCabe said.
They’ve also been getting support from the community. They did get questions about whether the menu would change — Brendan says the hotel is famous for its soups.
“We’ll have soups, absolutely and we will pay homage to the previous owners and everything but what we’re going to do a little something new so a little old a little new also a little bit of mystery,” Flansburg said.
Brendan says there’s a lot of attachment around town to a giant century-old urinal. It was being worked on while Stablow was there, so a photo came from the hotel’s Facebook.
But Brendan says it’s not going anywhere.
“It’s pretty legendary around here around the area as a kid like I said before coming up you’re I mean you’re looking up at this urinal and it makes quite the impact you know you don’t forget about that,” Flansburg said.
Brendan says he’s been coming to the hotel since he was a kid. He and Beth are hoping to get the hotel back open later this year.
The hotel had belonged to the previous owners — the Reynolds family — for more than 100 years.
