Hearts’ lead over Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership has been cut to just a point with two games to go. Can they get over the line and secure their first top-flight title in 66 years?
And then there were two, not only in terms of matchdays left in the 2025-26 Scottish Premiership season, but also the number of clubs that can win the title.
Following Celtic’s 3-1 comeback win over Rangers in Sunday’s Old Firm derby, Danny Röhl’s side were knocked out of contention in the battle for top spot. Rangers will finish in third place, with a seven-point gap between themselves and Celtic in second, and an even larger gap (eight points) to table-topping Hearts with only two games left to play.
All eyes now turn to Wednesday night, with both Celtic and Hearts in action in games against Motherwell (A) and Falkirk (H) respectively.
Hearts could even win the title on Wednesday should they win and Celtic lose, but any other combination of results will see it go to the final day to decide the destination of the trophy.
That final game of the season on Saturday is Celtic vs Hearts – a potential winner-takes-all clash at Celtic Park.
Hearts may still be in pole position for their first top-flight league title in 66 years, but their situation could have been even more comfortable had they not dropped points at the weekend in a 1-1 draw at Motherwell.
It was yet another game in which Hearts recovered points from a losing position, with Lawrence Shankland’s first-half equaliser coming 18 minutes after Stephen Kingsley had scored in his own net. That means Derek McInnes’ side have won more points from losing positions than any other team in the league this season (20), with over half of those coming in their last five matches (11).
If Hearts do complete the job in the coming week, they’ll end a 40-season duopoly in Scottish football, with either Celtic (22) or Rangers (18) winning each of the previous 40 top-flight titles. The last team outside the Old Firm duo to win the Scottish top-flight was Aberdeen in 1984-85 – their second successive title under the management of Alex Ferguson.
Yash Thakur / Data AnalystAberdeen (1979-80, 1983-84, 1984-85) and Dundee United (1982-83) are the only teams other than Rangers or Celtic to win the Scottish top flight over the last 50 seasons, since a major reorganisation of the league led to a new three-tier setup and the creation of a new Premier Division in 1975.
At the time of writing, the Opta supercomputer still favours Hearts to win the title ahead of Celtic, although their projected chance of glory has reduced following the results this weekend.
Hearts won the 2025-26 title in 59.0% of the Opta supercomputer’s latest 10,000 season simulations, but that projected chance was 76.5% on Saturday morning before the weekend’s action.Celtic, after gaining two points on Hearts with their win over Rangers, are now given a 41.0% chance of winning a fifth successive Scottish Premiership title. They only did so across 22.6% of the supercomputer’s simulations on Saturday before Matchday 35 began.
Hearts will have started the day top of the Scottish Premiership table for 248 days in total across 2025-26 at the time of kick-off on Wednesday evening, 215 more than Celtic (33), but it all comes down to the final five days of action for both clubs to determine the eventual winner in what has arguably been the best Scottish title race for decades.
