Guns N’ Roses' studio recording of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” released as a single on May 11, 1992, and appearing on their 1991 Use Your Illusion II album, was well received. According to Collider.com, Dylan, in an interview, shared his opinion on the Guns N’ Roses take, saying, “Guns N’ Roses is Ok, Slash is Ok, but there’s something about their spin of the song that reminds me of the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”
The outlet goes on to explain that Dylan insinuated that the rendition was “emotionless” due to the movie’s synopsis, which finds a small town doctor realizing that “the population of his community is being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates.”
Even though Dylan wasn’t hyped about Guns N’ Roses’ reimagining of his song, the lead singer of GNR, Axl Rose, cited Dylan as the one who requested that his band cover the tune.
“Bob asked me, ‘When you gonna record ‘Knocking' on Heaven’s Door?’ and I said, ‘I don’t know, but we really love that song. And then he said, ‘I don’t give a f-ck. I just want the money.’ True story,” Rose recalled.
Dylan’s original was released in 1973 as part of the movie soundtrack for Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. And, while he was the sole writer of the song, Guns N’ Roses’ take became more commercially successful internationally. Dylan's original did make waves, peaking at No. 12 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Many other covers of Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” exist outside of Guns N’ Roses’ version. Eric Clapton, Randy Crawford, and Neil Young are among the artists who have put their vocals on the song throughout the years.
