For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Iowa high school state champion Will Van Zee has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at The Ohio State University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am extremely grateful and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at The Ohio State University! Thank you to my family, friends, and coaches- especially Coach Shawn, Coach Adam, Coach Kelly and Coach Kim- for pushing and believing in me! I also want to thank Coach Norm and Coach Bill for giving me the opportunity to continue swimming. I am ecstatic to see where this journey takes me! GO BUCKS!
A junior at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Van Zee has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming and diving team since his freshman year. He also swims club with the Waukee Waves, where he specializes in distance freestyle.
Van Zee is coming off a monumental 2025-26 short course season. He entered the fall with lifetime bests of 1:42.30 and 4:39.47 in the 200/500 free and had never swum the mile, yet by season’s end had dropped nearly five seconds in the 200 free and over 17 in the 500 free.
He chipped away at his lifetime bests early in the season and clocked 15:54.29 in his first-ever mile, but took things to another level at his first taper meet, the IHSAA State Championships in February. There, he upgraded from bronze to gold in the 500 free, crushing his best by 13 seconds with a 4:22.76, and made the 200 free ‘A’ final for the first time, finishing runner-up in 1:37.49, a drop of nearly four and a half seconds. He also helped Valley take third in the 400 free relay (44.18 split) and fifth in the 200 free relay (20.50 split).
Van Zee closed out the short course season a few weeks later at the Iowa Swimming Short Course Championships, sweeping the distance free events. He clocked his current best times of 9:04.11 and 15:29.82 in the 1000 and 1650 free, posted a 4:27.36 en route to the 500 win, and touched second in the 200 free in 1:37.62, just off his state time. He also cracked personal bests in a pair of shorter off events, placing fifth in the 50 free (21.05) and seventh in the 100 free (46.39), his first time breaking 22 and 47.Top SCY Times:
200 Freestyle: 1:37.49 500 Freestyle: 4:22.76 1650 Freestyle: 15:29.82A Division I program, Ohio State competes in the Big Ten Conference, with the men’s team placing third out of nine teams at this past season’s conference championships.
Van Zee’s lifetime best in the 1650 free would have placed 20th at the conference meet and scored five points for the Buckeyes, despite it being an event he has only recently begun to develop. Meanwhile, it took 1:35.63 in the 200 free and 4:21.99 in the 500 free to crack the ‘C’ final, the latter less than a second off his current best.
On the team itself, Van Zee would have ranked sixth in the 1650 free, seventh in the 500 free, and ninth in the 200 free this past season, giving him a chance to contribute some added depth for the Buckeyes. With another full season to continue dropping time, along with recruiting still underway, it’s too early for any further projections.
Van Zee joins Gabriel Ardeleanu, Colt Chaires, Luke Collins, Ewan Dalrymple, Jackson Hartzler, and Camren Turowski in publicizing their commitments to the Buckeyes’ class of 2031.
