University of Illinois resumes final exams, assignments Sunday after Canvas hack

The University of Illinois has resumed final exams and assignments Sunday after a global cyberattack on a popular classroom software.

According to an email sent out by the university, access to Canvas has been restored, and all final exams that had been scheduled for Friday have been moved to Sunday.

Some schools, including Northwestern University, were still working to restore service on Canvas according to officials, but Illinois officials say the service has been thoroughly tested and is ready for regular use again.

”Any students who were scheduled to complete one or more final exam on Friday will receive confirmation of the new Sunday exam time(s) in a forthcoming email from the Office of the Registrar,” an email to students read.

Canvas is used by schools and universities to manage grades, course notes, assignments, lecture videos and more. There was a massive outage to the service last week, with a hacking group named ShinyHunters claiming responsibility for a service breach at Canvas.

“Illinois is one of thousands of universities currently experiencing the same issue. Technology and academic leaders are communicating with our peer institutions as we explore options for next steps,” Provost John Coleman wrote Friday. “I understand this situation adds new stress and uncertainty to the end of the academic year, and I thank you for your patience as we work through this disruption.”

The hacking group named claimed responsibility for the breach, said Luke Connolly, a threat analyst at the cybersecurity firm Emisoft. Instructure, the company behind Canvas, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment or questions about whether the system was taken down as a precaution or because the hackers knocked it offline.

The hacking group posted online that nearly 9,000 schools worldwide were affected, with billions of private messages and other records accessed, Connolly said.

Connolly described ShinyHunters as a loose affiliation of teenagers and young adults based in the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The group also has been tied to a other attacks, including one aimed at Live Nation’s Ticketmaster subsidiary.

Officials at the University of Illinois said students would be offered alternatives as determined by department heads and professors, citing potential conflicts with religious observances on Sunday and the Mother’s Day holiday.

The university said they were constrained by a variety of factors, including the expiration of some faculty contracts and student travel at the conclusion of the semester, and therefore were forced to resume final exams on Sunday.

Students are encouraged to visit a university website with information on the incident.
