The former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has strongly criticized Yashasvi Jaiswal after the Rajasthan Royals suffered a humiliating defeat against the Gujarat Titans in their recent IPL 2024 clash at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Saturday, May 9.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s debut match as the captain for the Rajasthan Royals turned into a nightmare. Notably, RR’s regular captain, Riyan Parag, was forced to sit out due to a hamstring injury. Sadly, it was a forgettable evening for both Jaiswal and the Royals in Jaipur.
Rajasthan Royals were completely outplayed by Gujarat Titans while chasing a huge target of 230 runs. The RR batters failed to handle the GT attack, and they eventually lost the match by 77 runs, and Yashasvi Jaiswal himself could score only three runs from four balls before getting out by Kagiso Rabada.
After GT pushed RR to fifth spot in the IPL 2026 points table, Irfan Pathan openly questioned the Rajasthan Royals’ on-field coordination and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s leadership during the match. He was furious with one incident involving spinner Yash Raj Punja and Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill.

Irfan Pathan said on his YouTube channel: “Another thing I did not understand was that when Yashasvi Jaiswal came out as captain for the toss, the coordination on the field was missing completely.”
During the final ball of the 13th over, the umpire called a delivery wide even though it appeared very close to the line and the ball did not look wide. This made Pathan raise suspicions on the teamwork and communication between Yashasvi and Dhruv Jurel.
Wide ball incident leaves Pathan shocked
He explained that Jurel, who was keeping wickets, caught the ball but quickly threw it back to the bowler without talking to the captain or discussing whether they should review the umpire’s decision.
Pathan felt that as a wicketkeeper, Jurel should have had a better idea about whether the ball was actually wide or not because he was standing closest to the ball.
This lack of communication shocked Pathan. He added, “There was no discussion with the captain, and the captain also did not communicate with him. That was confusing.”
The situation became even worse on the very next delivery when Gill took advantage of the moment and smashed a reverse sweep for four runs.
Later replays showed that the previous delivery was actually not wide, and that’s why Pathan felt there should have been communication at least.

The former World Cup winner further noted, “There should be coordination. There should be some checking between players. That lack of coordination was not understandable at all. RR will need to give serious attention to this going forward.”
Irfan Pathan left shocked after Jofra Archer’s nightmare spell against Gujarat Titans
The former cricketer was also disappointed with Jofra Archer, who had a rare off day with the ball. Archer ended up giving away 46 runs in his three overs against the Titans, and RR never managed to recover after the poor start in Jaipur.
Pathan explained, “I have never felt this disappointed watching a Rajasthan Royals match. That no-ball from Jofra Archer and his bowling in the first over, where he conceded 17 runs. This is the same bowler who has been taking wickets with the very first ball of the innings.
You would remember that bouncer, Phil Salt. He has troubled batters right from the first over and dismissed them consistently this season. But here, he gave away 17 runs in the first over and then 16 in the second. I could not understand the strategy at all in the powerplay.”
