Diamondbacks flamethrower Justin Martinez begins throwing bullpens

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks hard-throwing reliever Justin Martinez threw his first bullpen since undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Martinez threw off a mound at Salt River Fields on Friday after undergoing surgery last June.

According to manager Torey Lovullo, it was “electric.”

“105 mph, Sidd Finch,” Lovullo first joked. “It was 96-99, so good spot, really happy for him. They’re all working their butts off.”

Lovullo said Martinez is going to have to throw 15 bullpens before making the next steps in his progression, so he is still a ways away from coming back from the injured list. But this is a notable early step on the path.

Martinez, 24, saved 13 games for the D-backs from 2024-25 with a 2.76 ERA, a triple-digit fastball and a nasty secondary arsenal (splitter and slider). The D-backs signed him to a contract extension in spring training 2025 before his injury.

During spring training, Martinez pointed to late August as a potential target. He is behind reliever A.J. Puk and Corbin Burnes, who had internal brace procedures.

Puk and Burnes, meanwhile, threw bullpens at Chase Field on Friday.

“I think they were 30 pitches, they had an up-down, so they were trading off,” Lovullo said.

June is the where Puk is trending, while Burnes set a goal to be back by the All-Star break in July. Burnes has a longer build-up progression as a starter.

Ketel Marte returns to lineup, leading off

Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte missed Friday’s game with an illness, and he was back in the lineup on Saturday. A new wrinkle: Lovullo put him back in the lead-off spot against a right-handed starter, Clay Holmes of the New York Mets.

Marte started the year hitting first against all pitchers, but the Diamondbacks went away from that strategy in favor of Geraldo Perdomo jumping back into the lead-off spot. After an offensive malaise over the past couple weeks, the D-backs are switching it up again.

“It’s my job to figure out the pieces of the puzzle, so Marte’s back leading off, Perdomo will be hitting third, they’re going to surround Corbin Carroll,” Lovullo said.

Perdomo went 0-for-5 on Friday, with Lovullo seeing a player looking to do too much at the plate.

    More Diamondbacks injury notes

    – First baseman Carlos Santana will play a couple more games on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Reno, and the team will see how it goes by the end of the weekend, Lovullo said. It was a similar update to the one he gave earlier this week, as Santana has played in five games already. He is 2-for-19 in Reno.

    – Outfielder Jordan Lawlar will undergo more imaging next week to assess how his broken right wrist is healing and what baseball activities he can start to ramp up. He won’t be eligible to return until early June.

    – Shortstop prospect Kayson Cunningham, Arizona’s No. 2 prospect on MLB Pipeline, went on the seven-day injured list on Friday. Farm director Chris Slivka told Arizona Sports that Cunningham is in concussion protocol after an incident in batting practice and should return shortly. The 19-year-old is batting .394 in 25 games this year for Single-A Visalia.

    – First baseman Tyler Locklear (elbow and shoulder surgeries) was reinstated from the injured list and optioned to Reno on Friday. He is off to a hot start at 4-for-7 with a home run and a ground-rule double. “Just need to continue to get him at-bats and work defensively at first base so when the opportunity comes up, he’s ready,” Slivka said.
