The Chicago Cubs have been red-hot for weeks now, and the feat they achieved Friday hasn’t been matched in 90 years.
Buoyed by key hits from Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch and some strong pitching from Ben Brown and Javier Assad, the Cubs scored a 7-1 series-opening win over the Texas Rangers in Arlington, giving them their 10th consecutive win.
If that number sounds familiar to Cubs fans, it’s because this is now their second winning streak of 10 games this season, as they had racked up 10 in a row in late April before losing three games to the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.
That puts them at 20-3 in their last 23 games, and has them firmly planted at the top of the National League Central and has them owning the top record in Major League Baseball.
As could be expected, the Cubs don’t pull off multiple double-digit winning streaks in the same season very often.
According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, the Cubs have now had multiple winning streaks of 10 games or more in the same season for only the seventh time in team history and only the second time in the last 115 years.
Prior to this season, the Cubs last had two 10-game winning streaks in the 1935 season, a year where they reached the World Series before losing to the Detroit Tigers.
In fact, the Cubs have reached the World Series the last three times they have had multiple double-digit winning streaks, also reaching the Fall Classic in 1906 and 1910. Unfortunately, they didn’t win any of those three championships, falling to the White Sox, Athletics and Tigers, respectively.
Another winning streak the Cubs are still working on is their remarkable home winning streak, with 15 consecutive victories at Wrigley Field dating back to mid-April. It’s the second-longest home winning streak in team history, trailing the 18-game winning streak they posted in that remarkable 1935 season.
The Cubs and Rangers will continue their series on Saturday evening when they face the Texas Rangers, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m.
