Jason DeCaro earned his ninth win of the season and lowered his earned run average to just 1.91 on the season, tossing five shutout innings while allowing four hits, walking one and striking out seven. At 93 pitches through those five innings, DeCaro gave way to Walker McDuffie in the sixth, but UNC’s normally reliable reliver got himself into trouble by allowing a single and three consecutive walks, scoring Pittsburgh’s first run of the game. Freshman Caden Glauber relieved Mcduffie, and Glauber promptly induced an inning-ending double play on just his second pitch, ending the Panther threat.
Glauber would go the rest of the way for UNC, striking out five Pittsburgh hitters while allowing only two baserunners. His ERA sits at 1.95 on the season, just percentage points behind his teammate DeCaro.
At the plate, UNC scored its first three runs of the game courtesy of three solo home runs: Gavin Gallaher crushed a 403-foot blast in the first, Macon Winslow went deep in the second and Cooper Nicholson sent his team-leading 12th home run of the season out of the yard in the fourth. Winslow tacked on his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Eight UNC starters ended the game with at least one hit, but only Jake Schaffner finished with more than one. It was Schaffner who came around to score on Winslow’s sacrifice fly after singling and advancing to third base on another single and a walk. After that insurance run scored, Glauber struck out the side in the ninth to seal the win.
With Friday’s victory, UNC is now 38-9-1 overall on the season and 18-7 in ACC play. The second game of the three-game series against Pittsburgh is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m.
