ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Boxers, referees and others who participated at last weekend’s Boxing Extravaganza at the Blue Cross Arena are still waiting for their paychecks.
News10NBC’s Garrett Chan spoke with boxers and their representatives who said everything about the event was poorly planned. Several boxers and managers said it’s a gut punch that they’re not getting compensated for something they love doing and put aside much of their lives to prepare for last weekend’s event.
Lavias Williams was in the co-main event match at the Boxing Extravaganza, but it was removed from the match card. He said he’s been in the sport for a long time and fought two world champions.
“So me asking for what I asked for and I couldn’t get that. It was an eye opener. And you couldn’t find me being a co-main event is mindblowing,” Williams said.
Williams said in the months leading up to the Boxing Extravaganza, he was working a night shift job and had to sacrifice it so he could train. He ended up losing that job days before the fight.
“They put me on the poster, and the person that’s on the flyer with me, it’s not even my opponent,” Williams said.
Raymond Rivera is the boxing manager for Julio Rosa. Rivera said Rosa tore his rotator cuff during his fight against Bryce Ellis during the main event. Rivera said he spotted multiple red flags in the days and moments leading up to the event and he’s making sure Rosa is getting the money he deserves.
“Some of our fighters are working fighters that they work for a living and they do this to try to make it to the top. Right now, my fighter is out of work, out of a paycheck, and all he’s doing is getting hospital treatment,” Rivera said.
Chan spoke on the phone with Bryce Mills’ father, Steven. Bryce was supposed to be paid $30,000 for being in the main event. Steven Mills said through all of the promoters they have worked with, he’s never seen something as poorly planned as this. He added it’s not on fighters to promote the show and hopes that all of the fighters get paid soon.
“These guys going to that ring to battle and they bleed, they get cut, they get hurt. They need to get compensated ASAP,” Rivera said.
Chan reached out to the New York State Athletic Commission to connect him with the referees, doctors and physicians who worked the event. The commission got back with the below statement:
“The New York State Athletic Commission has taken appropriate regulatory action in this matter, including the suspension of the promoter’s license and referral to the appropriate authorities. Because this matter is now the subject of an active investigation, the Department does not have any further comment at this time.”
An online crowdsourcing campaign is asking for money to pay the fighters. At last check, it raised $240. Derick Gramling, the promoter, donated $40 of those dollars himself.
