ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Another group of students from across Monroe County have been honored with an award by the Rochester Police Department for “doing the right thing.”
Tabitha Cohen, an eight grader from Brighton, was with her father on the Charlotte Pier when she heard someone yelling from below. Cohen saw a man clinging to the ice and called 911.
She even ran down the pier to flag down first responders. They rescued the man just as he started going under water.
“It was really stressful, I was definitely probably in shock for half of it. I kind of blacked out,” said Cohen. “I kind of went into this calm state of mind where I just was like autopilot. It was like important from what I’ve seen in movies and I’ve taken a few classes on it. You need to get them out as fast as possible and to a warm dry area and clothes.”
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination for the Do the Right Thing award.
The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches. You can learn more about nominating a student here.
