Investment minister: Egypt eyes heavy, agricultural industries localization through partnership with Belarus

Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Mohamed Farid Saleh, Thursday, May 7, 2026, said Egypt is seeking to turn into a regional hub for the manufacturing and export of agricultural equipment and heavy machinery to African and Arab markets, as part of the State’s strategy to develop local industrialization and transfer advanced technology.

During a field tour of the Belarusian capital, Minsk, which included visits to the factories of MTZ Tractors, MAZ trucks and buses, and the Minsk Dairy Plant, the minister discussed prospects for industrial cooperation between the two countries. The visit took place as part of his official trip to Belarus and his participation in the meetings of the Egyptian-Belarusian Joint Committee.

The minister highlighted a preliminary agreement to launch a feasibility study for establishing a joint industrial complex with MTZ to localize the production of tractors and heavy agricultural machinery in Egypt, with high local-content rates. He said the project is intended to support exports to regional markets, reduce import costs, and create new job opportunities.

Egypt possesses strong capabilities that qualify it to become a regional logistics hub for maintenance services, spare parts supply, and re-export activities, benefiting from its extensive network of free trade agreements with numerous countries and economic blocs, the minister said.

During his visit to MAZ’s factory, Farid discussed opportunities to establish production and assembly lines for trucks and buses in Egypt to meet local market needs and expand into neighboring markets, thereby contributing to the development of the transport and engineering equipment sectors.

The minister toured Minsk Dairy Plant No. 1, where he reviewed the latest technologies used in dairy and lactose production. He also discussed with company officials a proposal to establish a joint project in Egypt to produce powdered milk for industrial use and infant formula. The proposed project would rely on locally sourced raw materials to increase added value and provide high-quality products at competitive prices.

Farid stressed that these moves fall within the framework of an integrated vision to transform trade cooperation between Egypt and Belarus into sustainable industrial and investment partnerships. He also highlighted the organization of a joint business forum with the participation of 24 major Egyptian companies operating in the pharmaceutical, iron and steel, and textile sectors.

Belarusian company officials said they are ready to transfer technical expertise and provide training to the Egyptian side, and that setting up production lines or joint factories in Egypt is a strategic priority for expanding into African and Middle Eastern markets.
