Nancy Guthrie Update: Criminologist Floats Red Herring Theory in Suspects Motive

As Nancy Guthrie remains missing three months after her abduction in Tucson, Ariz., a criminologist recently floated a "red herring" theory suggesting that the perpetrator had no idea the 84-year-old was Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie's mother.

On May 6, The CW aired a special titled NewsNation Presents: The Nancy Guthrie Mystery. NewsNation Senior National Correspondent Brian Entin spoke with Dr. Casey Doran, a criminologist, behavioral analyst, and attorney, among other experts.

"This person knew her. I don't think she knew this person," Doran speculated. "And it could have been somebody who saw her on the Today show with her daughter, Savannah, maybe not even have met her. Could have been an Uber driver that she didn't leave a big enough tip for. Could have been any of hundreds of service workers. I mean, she's been in this house since the '70s."

Additionally, the criminologist threw out an unexpected possibility involving the suspect in Nancy's case, given Savannah's level of fame.

"I would not even be surprised if they knew, in passing, Nancy Guthrie, but did not even understand that she is the mother of Savannah," Doran pointed out. "I could be a red herring. I could just be the world's weirdest coincidence. And we've seen stranger ones."

She added, "It seems unlikely, but we have to consider it. Because we keep looking for somebody who has a beef with Savannah or a beef with Nancy. So it could be somebody who Nancy was not even aware [that] had a beef with her, or that she offended them in some way."

On Jan. 31, Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home. Her family reported her missing on Feb. 1, the same day that the Pima County Sheriff's Department launched its search for the 84-year-old. Despite the FBI releasing photos and video clips of a masked suspect on Nancy's porch and Savannah offering a $1 million reward, no suspect has been named in the case.
