ALBANY – Confusion is swirling around New York’s state budget after mixed messages from top officials.
Gov. Hochul announced a tentative agreement with lawmakers on a state budget this morning, but Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie says there’s no deal. The state budget was due April 1.
The tentative deal announced by the governor addressed auto insurance rates, childcare, utility costs and other issues. Assemblywoman Jen Lunsford said there are money issues to be addressed before a budget is finalized.
“I believe that the governor got a little ahead of herself,” she said. “While certain issues that are important to her have been decided, the overwhelming majority of the budget, the part that involves money that we all care about, those are still very much open.”
Lunsford said Medicaid is a large part of the budget, and discussions about it aren’t finalized.
“I’m frustrated that we have such a short time frame to work out those issues that are the most important to me and my constituents,” Lunsford said.
Assemblyman Brian Manktelow said he tried to get answers about why there was no deal but didn’t get any.
“I thought we were getting along and moving the budget process forward, especially when we headed over to conference before we went into the chambers to do the extender,” he said. “And then while we were in conference, we came out, and then we heard that there is no deal.”
Manktelow is frustrated with not having a deal because lawmakers have been in session since January.
“I really feel bad that we cannot have a budget on April 1,” Manktelow said. “The people, all of us, including yourself, your family, us, we all deserve a budget on time. There’s no reason that cannot be done.”
Lawmakers have until Monday to decide on another extension or to approve a state budget.
