Nancy Guthrie Updates: Acting Attorney General Addresses Potential FBI Takeover

The search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has entered its fourth month without answers—but with plenty more questions, including ones about how the case has been handled in Pima County, Arizona.

Recent comments from FBI Director Kash Patel regarding the Pima County Sheriff’s Department raised questions about interagency coordination in the ongoing investigation.

"The first 48 hours in anyone’s disappearance are the most critical," Patel said on the May 5 episode of Hang Out With Sean Hannity. "And here’s how these cases work: It is a state matter. It’s a state and local law enforcement matter. What we, the FBI, do is say, ‘Hey, we’re here to help. What do you need? What can we do?'”

"And for four days, we were kept out of the investigation. And when we were finally let in, Sean, look what we did. We went in and got the Ring doorbell," he continued.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department then issued a statement that countered Patel's comments.

"The FBI was promptly notified by both our department and the Guthrie family. While the FBI Director was not on scene, coordination with the Bureau began without delay," the statement read, in part.

Now, in a new interview with NewsNation, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche addressed speculation about whether the FBI could take over the case, stressing that the effort remains a coordinated investigation rather than a transfer of control between agencies.

"The FBI has worked closely since the day that this happened with the local law enforcement, and there’s been reports of friction," Blanche told the station. "I’ve seen those reports. We are here to help, and the FBI, President Trump authorized and directed us to do everything that we can to help that investigation. This is, at its heart, a local investigation because of the nature of this type of potential crime, but the FBI remains exacting where we’ve been, which is we’re ready, willing, and able to help as much as we can. We don’t like interagency squabbles. Nobody likes that. That doesn’t help the investigation. But we are in a complete cooperative mode with the local law enforcement."

Blanche was also asked if he felt that the FBI should take over the investigation at this point.

"Well, I don’t think or not think that," he replied. "I think that any investigation like this should be done by a coordinated approach, right? There’s tools that the local law enforcement has that the FBI doesn’t have. So, in any investigation like this, it’s not somebody taking over or taking a back seat. It’s working together to solve the crime."

Guthrie has been missing since Feb. 1. Authorities believe that she was abducted from her home in the Catalina Foothills of Arizona.
