We’re at the one-third mark of 2026, and the year has remained a packed one for new, rising and longtime pop stars alike. April saw some veteran pop stars cement their legacies with festival appearances while others wrote one of their earliest chapters, while other breakout artists confirmed their superstardom with album releases that showed just how far they’d leveled up. And a pair of all-time greats also made their presence felt this month in very different ways — one of them posthumously.
This week on the Greatest Pop Stars podcast, we looked back at an eventful April in pop stardom. Host Andrew Unterberger is joined by Billboard staffers Kyle Denis and Michael Saponara to share and debate our respective March top five lists, while also naming some honorable mentions, some disappointments, and some artists who we’re looking forward to in the next few months of the year. (If you want to listen back to our first three 2026 recaps, or any of our 2025 episodes, you can check them all out here.)
For this April, we ask all the most pressing questions in pop stardom: Did Justin Bieber’s Coachella performances take him to new level of 2020s pop stardom? Are we surprised that a new Ella Langley and Morgan Wallen duet didn’t immediately take over the charts forever? Are we now comfortable calling Noah Kahan a pop star? How down are we with Olivia Rodrigo’s new direction? How excited are we for Confessions on a Dance Floor II based on these new Madonna songs? And perhaps most importantly: What does the box office success of Michael — and the streaming bumps his catalog has subsequently received — say about how people are currently feeling about the King of Pop?
Check it out above, and subscribe to the Greatest Pop Stars podcast on Apple Music or Spotify (or wherever you get your podcasts) for weekly discussions every Thursday about all things related to pop stardom!
