Alabama softball ends regular season with a series sweep over South Carolina

Alabama softball swept South Carolina in its final regular season series, earning its seventh SEC series win of the season and its 19th SEC game in the series finale on Sunday.

This is the most single-season SEC series victories for the team since 2019 and its most SEC single-game wins since 2014.

    Game 1: Alabama 3, South Carolina 2

Alabama opened its weekend series on Thursday against South Carolina with a close 3-2 win.

The Gamecocks were first on the board, scoring off a fielding error in the second inning. Alabama infielder Brooke Wells came into the second exploding for a two run home run to give Alabama the lead.

This is Wells’ 21st home run of the season, tying her for third most home runs in a single season with 2012’s Kaila Hunt.

South Carolina then took advantage of another Alabama error in the sixth, this time a throwing error, which tied the game 2-2. To bring home the game for Alabama, outfielder Kinley Pate brought home a run off a wild pitch before pitcher Vic Moten pitched a 1-2-3 game to finish out the seventh.

“A saying we’ve had for years is ‘gritty not pretty’. I’ll be the first to say that. I’ll take a gritty win over a pretty loss any day,” head coach Patrick Murphy said.

    Game 2: Alabama 1, South Carolina 0

Coming off a close win Thursday, Alabama shut out South Carolina 1-0 on Friday to secure the weekend series.

Both teams went into the fifth scoreless. While South Carolina was unable to break out of its runless trance, Alabama outfielder Ana Roman brought in catcher Marlie Giles with a 2-out double putting Alabama ahead 1-0.

This proved enough for Alabama to bring home the game, marking its 22nd shutout of the season.

“We’ve said from the beginning, the defense and pitching have been consistent and today that’s what won us the game. The defense and pitching were there for us,” head coach Patrick Murphy said.

    Game 3: Alabama 4, South Carolina 3

Alabama ended its regular season Saturday with a 4-3 win over South Carolina to finish out the weekend series.

South Carolina got off to a strong start putting up a run in the second and the third, while Alabama stayed runless.

Giles broke this runless streak in the fourth with a bases loaded walk. Following her lead, Roman hit a single to left to tie the game 2-2. Young closed out the third with another bases loaded walk putting Alabama ahead 3-2 going into the fourth.

Utility player Alexis Pupillo brought in Wells with an RBI single in the fourth, putting Alabama ahead a solid 4-2.

South Carolina tried to rally in the sixth but was only able to bring in a home run before pitcher Jocelyn Briski retired the Gamecocks final six pitchers to secure the series sweep.

Alabama will play again as the No. 2 seed in the SEC tournament on Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky. The Crimson Tide is set to face off against Arkansas and first pitch is docked for 1 p.m. CT.
