In the late 70, Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks collaborated on a song about friendship that would jump-start his solo career and become one of yacht rock's most enduring staples.
"Whenever I Call You Friend" landed squarely at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in October 1978. It remained a chart staple for a remarkable 20 weeks in total.
Loggins and the legendary Melissa Manchester co-wrote the song. Manchester’s official website quoted the artist discussing the tune that appeared on Loggins’ second solo LP Nightwatch.“Kenny and I kept meeting each other at award shows, and he asked if I wanted to write with him. We met up, and we knocked it out. It was great. As a writer, he knows what he wants. I’d rather be in a room with someone like that than not.”

Once the song was written, Loggins needed someone to sing it with. He recalled how he enlisted Nicks, then a member of Fleetwood Mac, to lend her vocals to the track.
In 2024, he told PEOPLE Magazine that he first became friendly with Nicks after opening for Fleetwood Mac on their Rumors Tour. It was during that time that the singer and lyricist offered her talents as a vocalist if Loggins ever needed her.

The sessions for the song about friendship were reportedly anything but friendly. Nicks said Loggins pushed her so hard to get the vocal he wanted that she nearly quit recording.

"I called him Slave-Driver Loggins. He cracked the whip on me for two days to get that particular performance. And I was downright angry at points where I was going, 'I'm not going to do this.'"
"He said, 'Yes, you are.' He's a real good producer, Kenny, he got exactly what he wanted. When it was done, and I left, I was knocked out. I really had to keep my mouth shut and do what I was told. And it worked. He wasn't interested in a dull vocal."
The track was officially released and included Nicks as a featured contributor on the album version. However, she was not listed in the credits when the single was issued.
"I didn't realize at the time how difficult it was to go from a successful duo into being a successful soloist, and I credit Stevie Nicks a lot with my breakthrough, because it was the duet with Stevie that ultimately made a huge difference in launching my solo career, 'cause she was so loved at the time."
"Whenever I Call You Friend" was Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks' only collaboration. It remains one of the most beloved of the 1970s.
