Padma Lakshmi does not want Kristen Kish to pack her knives and leave Top Chef.
“I was rooting for Kristen. I’m always rooting for her,” Lakshmi, 55, exclusively shared with Us Weekly while celebrating season 1 of CBS’ America’s Culinary Cup. “You know, she feels like my little sister, and I couldn’t be more proud of her. She’s really blossomed in the role.”
When season 10 of Top Chef aired in 2012, Kish, 42, wowed judges Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and Lakshmi as a contestant. In 2024, the winner of Bravo’s reality show took over as host after Lakshmi exited to pursue other opportunities.
“[Kristen] brings a lot of empathy to the world, because she’s been through the process, which is something neither Tom nor Gail nor I could ever know what that’s like,” Lakshmi said. “I’m proud of her. I think she’s going to have a long career.”
Padma Lakshmi Says Leaving ‘Top Chef’ Was ‘About Having a Personal Life’
While the best-selling author told Us she doesn’t keep up with new episodes, it’s not because she isn’t a fan of the show.
“Even when I was doing Top Chef, I didn’t watch it because I knew it happened,” she explained. “I look back on it fondly. Many people I love dearly are still on that show. That is a legacy I helped create. I’m proud of that show. I’m still rooting for that show.”
For now, Lakshmi’s focus is on celebrating a successful first season of America’s Culinary Cup. CBS’ new hit stars 16 of the country’s most elite chefs competing in the ultimate culinary arena.

“I think there’s room for all of us. I just wanted to do something different and see what I could do when I created it from scratch myself,” she dished. “I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved and how much we’ve been able to showcase America’s really beautiful and diverse food.”
Top Chef's Kristen Kish Felt 'More Confident' in 2nd Season as Host
With the finale quickly approaching on Wednesday, May 13, Lakshmi said she is proud to be part of a show where the winner receives a $1 million check, the largest cash prize in culinary television history.
“That, of course, brings out a lot of amazing talent that wouldn’t normally consider competing in this kind of forum,” she shared. “But I think the biggest thing was really just to give the chefs every ingredient, weapon, appliance that they would need to sort of take away all of the tricks and gimmicks that are sometimes in reality programming. … I just wanted to see what they could do when it was only about the cooking.”
