Chicago officials are warning “severe traffic congestion and delays” are expected throughout Thursday and Friday during services for Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew, who was killed in the line of duty in late May when a gunman opened fire at Swedish Hospital.
A visitation for Bartholomew will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church on North Sheridan Road and funeral services begin at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church on North Sheridan Road.
Several streets are expected to be impacted by the services, including DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Sheridan Road and Bryn Mawr Avenue, according to Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
“Additional streets may also be impacted. Expect severe traffic congestion and delays. Alternate routes are suggested and motorists should allow for extra travel time,” OEMC said in a release.
The impacts are expected starting at 11 a.m. on Thursday and will continue until 9 p.m., OEMC said. They will start back up around 9 a.m. on Friday and continue until roughly 3 p.m.
Bartholomew, 38, was killed while transporting a person to Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital near Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood, at 5140 N. California Ave., for observation, according to Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling.
Prosecutors said the suspect smuggled a gun into the hospital and fired shots at both Bartholomew and another officer before running out of the facility, prompting a lockdown at the hospital and a manhunt in the surrounding area.
Bartholomew, a father of three from Evanston and a 10-year veteran of CPD, was shot in the head and later pronounced dead. The other officer, 57 years old and a 21-year CPD veteran, remains in critical condition, officials said.
