The family of a 72-year-old Alpine resident who was shot dead inside of his home by San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies in November 2025 is taking legal action. In an April 26 legal tort claim, a precursor to a lawsuit, the family of Robert Liddell say deputies shot and killed Liddell during a wellness check. Deputies were called to Liddell’s home just after 6:30 p.m. after a neighbor went to knock on Liddell’s front door and noticed the door was partially open. Footage taken from the deputies’ body cameras shows deputies Jordi Herrera and Christopher Kleppe arrived at Liddell’s home on Kyrsten Terrace and entered through the front door.Warning: The content below may be disturbing to some viewers.

“Sheriff’s Office, anybody here?” Asked one of the deputies as they entered the home. Not hearing an answer, deputies surveyed the front room, kitchen, before moving down the hallway.“Hello, Sheriff’s Office, is anybody here?” Asked the deputy a second time.As the deputies walked down the hallway, Liddell exited his bedroom, holding what the family’s attorneys say was a BB gun.In the video, Liddell emerges from an unlit room, and yells for the deputies to get out. “Hey, drop it…hey, we’re the Sheriff’s Department,” yelled one of the deputies as Liddell is seen shuffling down the hallway.“One of your neighbors called…” said a deputy before opening fire. Moments later the deputies opened fire, killing Liddell. In the April 26 tort claim, obtained by the Times of San Diego, Liddell’s family says deputies unlawfully entered Liddell’s home.“When Mr. Liddell, who appeared to have been sleeping, walked into the hallway with a BB gun, deputies shot him dead,” reads the legal claim from the family’s attorney’s, Julia Yoo and Peter Bibring. “The Department and its employees violated Mr. Liddell’s rights, including but not limited to his right to be free of unlawful searches and excessive force under the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments.”The San Diego Sheriff’s Office declined to comment due to pending litigation.
