There were 91 incidents of antisemitic harassment and vandalism in San Diego last year, a 35% drop from 2024, the ADL reported Wednesday in its annual audit.
However, the national anti-hate organization said the number of incidents remains historically high, and the recent decline may reflect under-reporting.
“We documented 91 antisemitic incidents in San Diego in 2025, down from 139 in 2024,” said Fabienne Perlov, ADL San Diego regional director. “But this decrease doesn’t mean progress, as nearly one in four incidents now target Jewish institutions.”
“We also know this decrease likely reflects under-reporting as families lose faith in institutional responses or fear retaliation against their children,” she said.
The ADL classified 24 of the 2025 incidents in the city as vandalism and 67 as harassment. There were no assaults reported.
Nationally, there were 6,274 incidents of antisemitic assault, harassment and vandalism in 2025, an average of 17 incidents per day, according to the ADL audit. This was a 33% decrease from 2024, but the organization said the number remains considerably higher than in years prior to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.
“I grew up in San Diego and have been at the synagogue for 23 years, and nothing compares to these last few years,” said Rabbi Scott Meltzer of Ohr Shalom Synagogue in Bankers Hill. “We have been vandalized with hate-filled graffiti multiple times and the perpetrator is still nowhere to be found.
“There is great fear in my congregation. Our security budget has skyrocketed to make our building safe,” he said.
The annual ADL audit includes both criminal and non-criminal acts of harassment, vandalism and assault against individuals and groups as reported to the ADL by victims, law enforcement, the media and partner organizations. General criticism of Israel or anti-Israel activism is not classified as antisemitism.
The ADL urged anyone who experiences an antisemitic incident to report it online.
