Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse is mourning the sudden death of his brother Steve amid his team’s playoff run.
Nick, 58, was away from the 76ers to attend Steve’s funeral in Iowa on Tuesday, May 5, according to The Athletic. Steve passed away “unexpectedly” on Wednesday, April 29, the day before the Sixers defeated the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of their opening round playoff series.
Philadelphia went on to beat Boston in Game 7 on Saturday, May 2, advancing to the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against the New York Knicks.
Nick is expected to fly back to New York after the funeral on Tuesday and be on the bench for Game 2 against the Knicks on Wednesday, May 6. Nick flew out of New York on Monday, May 4, after the Knicks won Game 1.

According to his obituary, a visitation was held on Monday for Steve, who was fondly remembered as “a man of many talents and hobbies,” followed by a mass of Christian burial on Tuesday.
“He was highly skilled in repairing and stringing baseball and softball gloves, a craft he took great pride in and generously shared with others,” the obituary reads. “In recent years, Steve found joy in creating rosaries, a meaningful practice that became an expression of his faith and generosity. Steve’s love of nature was evident at an early age as he spent many hours fishing and exploring at the creek near his home.”
Steve married his wife, Lori Mueggenberg, in 1988 and the couple share two children: daughter Rachel and son Andrew.

“He and his wife, Lori, loved spending time outdoors, camping, traveling, and enjoying nature together,” Steve’s obituary adds. “Among Steve’s favorite family trips were journeys to Medjugorje, Thailand, and Spain. Above all, Steve will be remembered for his warm personality, quick wit, and joyful spirit. He loved to tell jokes and had a remarkable ability to make others smile. His family and friends admired his cheerfulness, kindness, and the genuine connections he built with everyone he met. His siblings describe him as an amazing and caring brother.”
During his media availability on Tuesday, Knicks head coach, Mike Brown, took time to mention the Nurse family.
“I heard about Nick’s brother and I’d like to pass my condolences along to Nick Nurse and his family, his brother’s family and all their friends,” Brown, 56, said. “Life is precious and you don’t wish that upon anybody.”
