Multiple UNC Teams Post Perfect Academic Progress Rates, New Report Says

Several UNC sports programs posted perfect single-year and multi-year academic progress rates for the 2024-25 academic year, according to the NCAA’s latest report. Academic progress rate (APR) is used to track performance of scholarship students who compete on varsity teams, and the score measures eligibility and retention each semester. A perfect score is 1000, and the minimum NCAA benchmark is 930.

The latest NCAA report shows five UNC programs posted perfect multi-year scores of 1000, which include rates from the 2021-22 academic year to 2024-25. The men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s basketball, women’s tennis and gymnastics teams all recorded 1000s. It is the 13th consecutive multi-year perfect score for women’s tennis and ninth consecutive for men’s golf. This is the first time the women’s basketball program has ever posted a multi-year perfect score (APRs have been measured for 22 years), while the 1000 for women’s golf is its third in a row and fourth in five cycles.

Overall, 25 of UNC’s 28 varsity teams scored at least a 980 in the multi-year rate; wrestling, men’s tennis and men’s basketball were the only programs which did not.

In the single-year metric, 14 UNC programs posted a perfect score of 1000, including men’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, field hockey and women’s soccer. The 1000 for the men’s basketball program was its second in the last three cycles and the sixth in the last seven for field hockey. The volleyball program’s perfect score was its fifth in seven cycles.

In total, UNC’s school-wide single-year score for the 2024-25 academic year was 989, down two points from the school-wide score of 991 in the 2023-24 report. The school-wide four-year rate was slightly higher at 990.

According to a release from the ACC, the league’s overall average APR of 991 is five points higher than the national Division 1 average. The five UNC programs to post perfect multi-year scores are among 112 ACC teams which did so, with at least two from all 18 schools.

“Today’s APR report once again highlights the outstanding achievements of our student-athletes, both in the classroom and in competition,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement. “We are proud of the continued excellence across our programs and deeply appreciate the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and administrators who remain committed to academic and athletic success.”
