Consider that; the Broncos have enjoyed winning seasons the last three years. That means four of his first five years were losers in the Mile High City.
On top of all that adversity, Sutton suffered a torn ACL in 2020. That was his third season. Since then, he bounced back, pushed through the terrible teams and coaches, and has become Bo Nix’s No. 1 receiver during this Sean Payton Era.
Historically, he’s been the No. 1 receiver every year of his career outside of his rookie campaign and that year lost to injury. But he’s now reaping the rewards of not only being relied upon offensively but of being part of a great, winning team.
His longevity has paid off statistically.
Over the course of last season, Sutton climbed the Denver Broncos all-time receiver ranks.
He’s now fifth in all-time yards (6,357), sixth in receptions (453), and eighth in touchdowns (39). With an average season by his standards in 2026, Sutton will be fourth in yards, passing Lionel Taylor, fourth in receptions, passing both Ed McCaffrey and Taylor, and he’ll be fifth in touchdowns, passing three Broncos legends along the way.
Essentially, only Rod Smith—the greatest Broncos receiver—Demaryius Thomas (RIP) and Shannon Sharpe—arguably the greatest tight end of all time—will be ahead of Sutton this year. Plus, Sutton could pass both Sharpe and Thomas in receptions, and pass Sharpe in yards in two seasons.
Simply, Courtland Sutton has slowly become one of the top-5 receivers in Denver Broncos history.
Where does Sutton’s legacy land in Broncos history?
The one thing the other guys in the top-5 all have is they were all part of Super Bowl victories.
Rod Smith was the No. 1 receiver during the late 90s when the Broncos won their first and then second Super Bowls. McCaffrey was the No. 2 guy, and Sharpe was the tight end of those teams. Then, DT rose to prominence as the No. 1 guy during the Peyton Manning Era, including that 2013 team which still holds many offensive records to this day.
Sutton has been unfortunate to be on a lot of losing teams. Obviously, they haven’t won a Super Bowl during his tenure, but clearly things have turned around the last three years.
If the Broncos keep winning, and even “just” earn an AFC Championship at some point, he should be considered a top-5 all-time great. If not, Courtland Sutton will land in the top-10 for all-time Denver Broncos receivers, which is still an honor.

Demaryius Thomas, Rod Smith, Shannon Sharpe, Riley Odoms, Haven Moses, Lionel Taylor, and Rick Upchurch are all in the Ring of Fame. Notably, McCaffrey isn’t in there, who has the most comparable stats to Sutton. So, for now it seems like Sutton won’t get in.
But he has three years left on this current deal, and if he plays in all three of them and stays productive, his numbers may be too great to ignore at that point.
