The People’s Republic of China proved dominant as ever in the diving tank at the World Cup Superfinal this weekend. With the advantage of competing on home soil in Beijing, China went eight for eight in gold medals this weekend and earned two 1-2 finishes as well.
Three Chinese divers reaped double golds: Jia Chen, Yuming Bai, and Zongyuan Wang.
Jia Chen claimed the women’s 3m springboard title in a razor-thin battle with her typical synchro partner Yiwen Chen. In the penultimate round, Yiwen led Jia by .15. Jia came back in the final round to claw past her compatriot, scoring a total of 374.40 to Yiwen’s 373.05. This was the inverse of the pair’s results from the 2025 Singapore World Championships.
The Chens, who are not related, joined forces to dominate the 3m synchro final. The duo beat out Aussie runner-ups Maddison Keeney and Alysha Koloi by over 30 points.
As mentioned, Bai led the men’s individual medal table with two golds. China tapped the 19-year-old to be the men’s platform diver in the mixed team event, just as they did in Singapore. Alongside Chengzan Liu, Shan Lin, and Wei Lu, Bai delivered a victory to his country, with Mexico and Australia taking the silver and bronze medals.
Individually, Bai enjoyed just as much success this weekend. He captured the win in the 10m platform in what was one of the most exciting competitions of the Cup against Mexican Randal Willars. After 11th-seed Willars took the lead in the third round and subsequently performed the highest difficulty dive of the final, Bai kicked it into another gear. He earned all 9.5s and 10.0s on his 5th round to snatch the lead, and he had another high-execution 6th round to bring him to a 542.95 win. Willars took runner-up in 538.15, a personal best.
Willars was a part of Mexico’s silver medal mixed team as well. Mexico finished #2 overall in the medal table with three silvers: Willars, the mixed team, and Osmar Olvera and Juan Manuel Celaya in the synchro 3m springboard. That gold went to Zongyuan Wang and Jiuyuan Zheng.
Wang, a 4x Olympic medalist, doubled up on golds in Beijing. In addition to the synchro springboard, he also took the individual event.
In its first diving meet back as a recognized country within World Aquatics, Russia earned one silver medal, courtesy of Anna Konanykhina in the women’s 10m platform. She finished a whopping 78.75 points behind 15-year-old Linjing Jiang.
Renjie Zhao and Zhihao Yang round out China’s gold medalists in the synchro platform.
